‘Satluj’: Centre Takes Charge of Diljit Dosanjh, Honey Trehan’s Film, Forms High-Level Committee To Review Content

“Satluj” a movie on the life of bank clerk-turned-human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra is making headlines all over. The film is not currently available for viewing in India as the streaming platform Zee5 removed it after 48 hours. This move has come under intense scrutiny from filmmakers, political parties and film buffs. The latest development suggests that The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) formed a high-level interdepartmental committee (IDC) on Monday to review the content of Honey Trehan’s film.

Earlier titled as “Panjab 95,” the film fought a long battle with the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) for over three years. “Satluj” starring Diljit Dosanjh, Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, Kanwaljit and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan is about the disappearance of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.

In an interview to Variety India, Diljit Dosanjh described the shoot of "Satluj" as one of the most intense ones of his career, saying, "It’s honestly one of the hardest films I have ever made in my career. Emotionally and physically, it extracted everything out of all of us. There were the long days, difficult conditions and intense scenes. But ultimately, it was the nature of the subject matter which really clung on to me. I think this is perhaps the first film in my career which required me to recuperate after the shoot.”

The order to take down “Satluj” from Zee5 was made under Section 69A of the Information Technology (IT) Act. As per this act, the government can remove online content that might threaten the sovereignty and public order in the country. This newly formed committee will review the film and make suggestions to the government. When “Panjab 95” was first submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Prasoon Joshi who chaired the body suggested a staggering 127 cuts. The unedited version was released on the streaming platform last Friday.
