An Epic for Gen-Z
Ramanand Sagar’s “Ramayan” has stood the test of time when it comes to emotional appeal. The narrative still engages with its nuanced portrayal of brotherhood, duty and sacrifice. Siddharth Kumar Tewary, who has made TV shows like “Shrimad Ramayan,” believes every generation should have its own retelling. He tells Variety India, “I’ve always believed that every generation should experience “Ramayan” in its own way. So I’m looking forward to seeing a fresh interpretation of one of the greatest stories ever told. I hope it makes people, especially the younger generation, want to rediscover the epic.”
Director Ranjan Kumar Singh, who has directed TV shows including “Jai Hanuman” (1997), “Mahabharat” (2013), and “Raavan” (2006), opines that the trailer needs to convey more than just scale. “The young generation needs to know the story of “Ramayan” for its values of brotherhood, love and sacrifice. It is important to show Lord Rama as a human. I am keen to see how they depict the vulnerability of Lord Rama and Raavan in the trailer. The casting is top-notch, so my expectations are high. I feel younger kids want more reality in emotions, while the scale should be magical on screen.”
Iconic Moments
Indian audiences are fascinated with larger-than-life character introductions in films. Tewary says he is keen to see how makers present the character of Lord Hanuman. He says, “He’s one of those rare characters you never stop discovering. Every time I revisit the “Ramayan,” I understand him a little differently. I’m really looking forward to seeing his journey on the big screen.”
Singh has high hopes for the portrayal of the relationship between Lord Rama and Sita. “The first part of the story is all about them. I want them to show a beautiful relationship where the love, devotion, and sense of sacrifice the two possessed come through. The trailer should capture that. Honestly speaking, one can watch a big-budget superhero or sci-fi movie for scale, but “Ramayan” needs its soul.”
Prabhas’ “Adipurush” faced criticism for its depiction of the tale. Nikhil Sinha of Triangle Films, which backed “Siya Ke Ram,” says, “I am very eager to see the trailer. Given the team and resources used for the film, everyone hopes for a spectacular result. I wish the team the best. As a fellow creator, I hope this effort puts Indian cinema on the global map.”
Tewary also agrees with Sinha that “Ramayana” is an important film for the Indian film industry. He says, “It’s an important moment. India has always had stories that belong on the world stage. The more we tell them with honesty, conviction and ambition, the more they’ll find audiences across the world.”
