Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer 2’ Trailer Sparks ‘Breaking Bad’ Comparisons With Walter White

Adit Ganguly

Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” has barely arrived with its trailer and fans are already playing detective.

The trailer for Nelson Dilipkumar’s sequel dropped on October 5, giving audiences a glimpse of Rajinikanth’s Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, along with an ensemble that includes Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, S.J. Suryah, Mohanlal and several other major names. The film is set to release in theatres on October 15.

But alongside the excitement over the film’s larger-than-life action and star-studded cast, fans have noticed something else. Several shots from the trailer bear striking visual similarities to characters and moments from “Breaking Bad” and its spin-off “Better Call Saul”.

A fan-made collage comparing the two has now put some of these parallels side by side, and the similarities are certainly hard to miss.

Vidya Balan and Lydia Rodarte-Quayle

One of the comparisons pairs Vidya Balan’s mysterious character in “Jailer 2” with Lydia Rodarte-Quayle, the calculating businesswoman played by Laura Fraser in “Breaking Bad”.

Balan appears in the trailer with a sharp, composed look, dressed in a dark blue sari with a distinctive hairstyle. Fans have placed the image alongside Rodarte-Quayle, whose similarly controlled demeanour and formal appearance made her one of the most memorable figures in the “Breaking Bad” universe. Balan plays Kantha in “Jailer 2”, marking her first collaboration with Rajinikanth. The comparison, however, appears to be based primarily on the visual presentation of the two characters rather than any confirmed connection between their stories.

Mithun Chakraborty and Hector Salamanca

Another comparison is considerably more recognisable to “Breaking Bad” fans.

A still of Mithun Chakraborty from “Jailer 2” is placed alongside Mark Margolis as Hector Salamanca. The two images feature older men seated in similarly composed, dramatic frames, immediately inviting comparisons with Hector, the formidable Salamanca family patriarch from “Breaking Bad”.

Mithun’s character is among the mysterious new additions to the “Jailer 2” universe, with the trailer deliberately revealing only glimpses of several of the film’s characters.

That ambiguity has given fans plenty of room to speculate, even though there is no indication that the character is actually based on Hector Salamanca.

Hakkim Shah and Lalo Salamanca

The comparison gets even more specific with Hakkim Shah.

A still featuring Indian actor Hakkim Shah has been placed alongside Tony Dalton as Lalo Salamanca from “Better Call Saul”. The two men have similarly intense expressions in the comparison, with the framing and styling making the resemblance particularly noticeable.

Lalo, played by Dalton, became one of the most prominent antagonists in “Better Call Saul”, the “Breaking Bad” prequel. Hakkim Shah, meanwhile, is part of the ensemble of “Jailer 2”. His appearance in the trailer has now become another point of discussion among fans.

Again, the connection being made online is a visual comparison, not an indication that the character is based on Lalo.

And then there is Walter White

The most obvious comparison comes when Rajinikanth’s Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is placed alongside Bryan Cranston’s Walter White.

The collage pairs a shot of Rajinikanth walking through smoke and destruction with Walter White in a similarly framed desert setting. Another pair places an explosion from “Jailer 2” alongside one of “Breaking Bad’s” most recognisable visual moments.

The cars have also caught fans’ attention. A vehicle from “Breaking Bad” is placed next to the cars seen in the “Jailer 2” trailer, creating another visual link between the two worlds.

None of this necessarily means “Jailer 2” is borrowing directly from “Breaking Bad”. Action films frequently use similar compositions, cars, explosions and character imagery. But in Nelson’s case, the comparisons are bound to attract attention because his work has previously been associated with the acclaimed crime series.

In fact, comparisons between “Jailer” and “Breaking Bad” are not entirely new. Fans had previously drawn parallels between Rajinikanth’s Tiger Muthuvel Pandian and Mike Ehrmantraut, another major character from the “Breaking Bad” universe.

With “Jailer 2” now seemingly offering even more imagery that reminds viewers of Gilligan’s crime universe, fans have plenty of material to work with.

Whether these are deliberate nods, coincidences or simply fans having fun with two very different cinematic worlds, one thing is clear: the “Jailer 2” trailer has given the internet another excuse to revisit “Breaking Bad.”
