Vidya Balan Reunites With R Balki For New Tamil Film, 17 Years After ‘Paa’

Vidya Balan has reunited with filmmaker R. Balki for a new Tamil film, 17 years after the two last worked together on "Paa". The actor announced the yet-to-be-titled project on Tuesday, September 29, sharing two pictures from what appears to be the early stages of production and confirming that she has begun work on the film.

Balan first shared a monochrome picture of herself seated on a couch, captioning it, "A quiet moment before the madness begins". In a second image, she is seen holding a script, wearing spectacles and sporting a long braid. She captioned the picture, "New Beginnings #NewTamilFilm with #RBalki". While the actor has confirmed the language of the project and her collaboration with Balki, no further details have been officially disclosed.

The film's title, storyline, Balan's character, additional cast and release plans remain under wraps. Her social media post, however, confirms that the project has moved into production.

It also marks a reunion between Balan and Balki after their last collaboration, "Paa", which released in 2009. The film starred Balan alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, with Bachchan playing Auro, a young boy living with progeria, and Balan portraying his mother, Vidya.

The new project comes at a busy point in Balan's career, with the actor already part of another Tamil film, Nelson Dilipkumar's "Jailer 2". She plays Kantha in the Rajinikanth starrer, which is scheduled to release in theatres on October 15, 2026.

Balan is also set to reunite with Akshay Kumar in an upcoming untitled comedy directed by Anees Bazmee. The film, which also stars Raashii Khanna, is scheduled for a December 4 theatrical release.

For now, the Balki collaboration remains deliberately under wraps, with Balan's "New Beginnings" post serving as the first official glimpse of the project. More details about the film are expected to emerge as production progresses.
