Sir Ben Kingsley On Shakespeare Shaping Every Role He Plays: ‘I’m Addicted To The Archetype’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Long before Sir Ben Kingsley won an Academy Award for "Gandhi" or portrayed everyone from a Mandarin impostor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Salvador Dalí, his understanding of performance was forged in the world of Shakespeare. Decades later, the veteran actor says those early years still define the way he approaches every new role.
Speaking exclusively to Variety India ahead of the Lionsgate Play premiere of "Desert Warrior," Kingsley reveals that his fascination has never been with historical accuracy alone, but with the timeless archetypes that sit beneath every great character. "Given my early diet of Shakespeare, it leaves one addicted to the archetype, and I'm very attracted to the animal in its pure form." For Kingsley, the emperor he portrays in "Desert Warrior" exists not simply as a ruler in history, but as part of a dramatic tradition that has endured for centuries.

"You have this emperor, who in the myth has his place in the archetype. There's the warrior, there's the queen, there's the madman, there's the devil, there's the holy man, there's the seducer, the poet and absolute power dropped into this wonderful mosaic of archetypes."
Rather than approaching the character through historical documentation, Kingsley says he embraced imagination, using the screenplay to speculate about how power is performed and preserved. "That is how you keep power over your court, and over your empire, and I found that the script completely supported that speculation on my part. It's pure speculation, but I enjoy it."
The actor also credits director Rupert Wyatt for recognizing that the film's characters operate on a mythic level as much as a historical one. "Rupert understands the archetypical value of the character in the myth." That philosophy has underpinned a career spanning more than five decades. Whether portraying Mahatma Gandhi, Itzhak Stern in "Schindler's List," Don Logan in "Sexy Beast" or Trevor Slattery in "Iron Man 3," Kingsley has repeatedly gravitated towards characters whose emotional truths outlive the eras in which they exist.
With "Desert Warrior," the actor once again returns to that, finding not just another emperor to play, but another timeless figure shaped by ambition, authority and the enduring pull of myth.
