Shekhar Kapur On John Abraham As The Next 007: ‘Why Must Bond Be a White British Man?’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As speculation continues over who will succeed Daniel Craig as 007, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur argues the conversation should extend beyond Britain and even beyond the West Kapur exclusively tells Variety India that John Abraham possesses the screen presence, restraint and effortless charisma needed to reinvent Bond for a new era, much in the same way Craig transformed Ian Fleming's legendary spy nearly two decades ago.

"The thought was deeply rooted in my own filmmaking history," Kapur says. "I was well aware that Barbara Broccoli and the Bond producers originally selected Daniel Craig to reinvent James Bond after watching his intense performance in my film 'Elizabeth.' He only played a brief role in that movie, but the producers looked at a single, specific close-up shot of his face and instantly recognized that he carried the raw, dangerous masculinity required to steer the franchise into the twenty-first century. That piece of casting history was playing heavily on my mind."

Craig portrayed Jesuit priest John Ballard in Kapur's 1998 historical drama "Elizabeth," starring Cate Blanchett. Years later, he would become the first blond actor to play James Bond, beginning with 2006's "Casino Royale," a casting decision that fundamentally reshaped the character for modern audiences.

With another casting process now underway, Kapur believes the franchise stands at a similar crossroads. "I was reading reports that Eon Productions is currently hunting for the next actor to step into the tuxedo," he said. "And I thought to myself: Why must James Bond inherently be a white British man? Why are we still bound by that post-colonial paradigm? Why can't the next iteration of the world's greatest spy reflect our global reality? Why can't he be Indian or Japanese?"

For Kapur, John Abraham emerged as an instinctive choice. "As I ran through international options, John Abraham immediately crystallized in my mind," he said. "He naturally projects an incredibly rare, effortless coolness. He is deeply suave, and whenever he commands a frame on screen, he maintains a completely detached composure."

The filmmaker believes those qualities align with what has historically defined Bond on screen, not simply physicality, but an understated confidence. "If the producers have the courage to take the franchise international," Kapur added, "John Abraham could deliver a phenomenal Bond."

Compelling choice

Kapur's comments revisit a conversation he first sparked publicly earlier this year, when he suggested Abraham could be a compelling candidate for the role. His latest remarks, however, place that opinion within the broader context of Bond's own evolution, drawing a direct parallel with Craig's unconventional casting and arguing that the franchise has always succeeded when it has challenged audience expectations.

While names from the UK remain at the center of industry conversations, Kapur believes the franchise's next bold reinvention may come from looking far beyond its traditional boundaries.
