Mohit Malik on ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’: ‘New Audiences Can Enjoy It as a Stand-Alone Film’ (EXCLUSIVE)
After making his film debut with “Azaad” (2025), Mohit Malik is now stepping into one of Hindi entertainment’s most popular universes with “Mirzapur: The Movie,” which hits theatres this Friday. A self-confessed fan of the series, Malik describes his entry into the franchise as a “dream come true.”
Malik, who is known for television shows such as “Doli Armaano Ki,” “Kulfi Kumar Bajewala,” and “Lockdown Ki Love Story,” auditioned for the “Mirzapur” series in 2018. “It was either for the role of Guddu or Munna, but it did not work out. However, now I am a part of this movie. It was a dream come true to work with such great actors,” he says. In 2023, he starred in the web series, "Chamak."

Malik says that he knew “Mirzapur: The Movie” director Gurmmeet Singh through mutual friends and the two had wanted to collaborate for years. “We had met through common friends and wanted to work with each other for a long time. This time everything fell into place. Besides being a fabulous director, he is a great guy, and that matters a lot because it helps you give your best. Gurmmeet, as well as writer Puneet Krishna, have a fantastic energy.”
In the film, Malik plays Birju Lohar, a revengeful lover. He shares that it’s a brand-new character introduced in the world of “Mirzapur.” The actor refrains from revealing more about the character. “I would like people to discover Birju on the big screen,” he says.
The actor, who has been a finalist on reality TV series like “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” Season 8 (2015) and “Khatron Ke Khiladi 12” (2022), says he is very upbeat about “Mirzapur: The Movie,” as he has seen genuine interest among people for the film. Sharing his thoughts on why he believes adapting the show into a film is a great idea, he says, “It’s one of the most successful Indian series and people want to watch the film in theatres. The other day I met a senior actor who said, ‘I haven’t seen the ‘Mirzapur’ series, but I want to watch the movie.’ It is a great opportunity to introduce the audience to the world of “Mirzapur”. Those who haven’t seen the series can enjoy it because it has a different plot with the characters in the show and some new additions. New viewers can enjoy it as a stand-alone movie, while fans of the show can connect with the world of ‘Mirzapur’.”
Malik spent a lot of time on set with Ravi Kishan. He also shares screen space with Pankaj Tripathi, Rasika Duggal and Ali Fazal. “I had a great rapport with everyone. Honestly, I was a bit intimidated as I was entering a clan where everyone knew each other, whereas I was new to the ecosystem. But they accepted me beautifully. Shweta Tripathi told me a lot of stories about the ‘Mirzapur’ family. Everyone came prepared and worked like a cohesive team. I loved being on the set,” he says.
