Mithun Chakraborty on His Appointment as West Bengal Government’s Cultural Advisor: ‘I Am Looking At Places That Can Be Developed For Tourism’

Mithun Chakraborty recently took on a new responsibility. The West Bengal government has appointed the veteran actor as a cultural advisor in the Information and Culture Department. The role holds special significance for the actor given his deep connection with the state. However, the news of Nana Patekar’s death has tempered his happiness. In a conversation, Chakraborty reflects on his bond with the late actor and his plans to contribute to West Bengal’s tourism sector.

Congratulations on your appointment as a cultural advisor to the West Bengal government. What does this new responsibility mean to you?

I’m currently traveling across West Bengal to explore tourism in the state. I am looking at places that can be developed for tourism. Being associated with the West Bengal government is not new for me. However, this responsibility feels special. I feel like the true son of Bengal. Sadly, my happiness is dimmed by a tragedy - the passing of Nana Patekar.

You shared a close bond with Nana Patekar.

Yes, he was—and I hate to use the past tense—a very close friend, much closer than anyone could guess. We didn’t go around singing songs about our friendship, but we were always there for one another. Both of us knew exactly what was going on in each other’s lives. The nation has lost a fine actor. I’ve lost a dear friend. It is a very personal loss for me. But what really shocked me was the suddenness of his passing. He was fine just hours before. It reminded me that the clock is ticking for all of us.

Nana and I were similar in many ways. Our interests went beyond cinema. We are both known as actors, but our concerns extended beyond it. Nana was known for his work with farmers and the lesser privileged. I’ve never known a more generous and kind-hearted man. Sure, he was ill-tempered at times, but that was when his passion was not matched by those around him. I am also like that.

How passionate are you about your new responsibility as a cultural advisor to the West Bengal government?

I don’t take any responsibility lightly, be it as a husband, a father, an actor, a politician or a citizen of India. I will be available to the West Bengal government whenever they require me. But let me clarify that my duties will be outside the cabinet. Like I said, I am currently traveling to explore tourism in Bengal. I am a true Bengali and am very happy to work for my people.
