In a landmark moment for West Bengal film industry, Hombale Films has picked up the overseas distribution rights of 'Bohurupi: The Golden Daku,' one of the big films of Durga Puja 2026. This comes after the Bengaluru-based production house took global distribution rights of "Gondhal," which is India's selection for Oscars 2027.

Expressing her happiness, filmmaker Nandita Roy who is also the co-director of 'Bohurupi: The Golden Daku tells Variety India, "This is a proud moment for us. We want our films to reach people beyond West Bengal. It is our dream that people who want to watch Bengali movies should have access to them in theaters. Our movies have great content. It is a joy to be able to travel to those who love Bengali cinema abroad."

Roy reveals that Hombale Films approached them first, which was a lovely surprise. "They told us they were keen to collaborate and would like to distribute our film globally," she quips.

Shiboprosad Mukherjee, the lead actor and co-director of the movie, adds, "It was a proud moment when they messaged me saying that they are keen to take our film to international markets. This is a huge jump for the West Bengal film industry. I feel it will open new doors for us. There might some struggle initially but this is a start. If this is a success then the future of Bengali films can be brighter. I am very thankful to Mayank Shroff of Cinepolis who worked hard to make this happen. This kind of support means a lot for a regional film. Hombale has given Indian cinema biggies like 'Kantara' and 'KGF' so this feels very special."

"Bohurupi: The Golden Daku" or "Bohurupi 2" is the sequel of "Bohurupi" that released in 2024. It is one of the biggest hits in the history of Bengali cinema. Shiboprosad Mukherjee plays the title role of Bohurupi/Bikram Pramanik. He is a righteous bank officer who decides to rob after facing injustice. In the second film, Jisshu Sengupta has come in place of Abir Chatterjee as the cop who is on the heels of Bikram's character. It is releasing on Oct.15 in India and will come globally on Oct. 23.
