Karnataka High Court Slams Ranveer Singh Over ‘Kantara’ Mimicry Row: ‘You Are Reckless’

By Sakshi Navare

Ranveer Singh got an interim relief from the Karnataka High Court on February 24. While the court stayed any coercive action against the actor for his ‘Kantara’ mimicry, which allegedly hurt the religious sentiments, it slammed the actor for his actions of mimicking a character from "Kantara: Chapter 1" at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

During the hearing, Justice M Nagaprasanna told Ranveer, “You, being an actor, have an influence on so many people. When you have that you should be responsible. You may mimic you may do anything. You have no right to hurt anyone's religious sentiments. You can't be loose tongue at all. You may be Ranveer Singh, you may be anybody.”

Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, who appeared for the actor, called his client’s remarks “completely insensitive” and submitted that Ranveer was willing to address any hurt caused.

The issue of the intent will be examined during the proceedings, noted the court. The judge further said that Ranveer has “definitely hurt the sentiments,”  adding, “I am not saying it is a deliberate statement. It is gross ignorance. It is a sacred act of the region.”

Calling out Singh’s action, the judge said, "You (Ranveer Singh) are reckless. And you have no right to do what you have done."

The court also shared that digital content has a lasting footprint, observing: “Words may be withdrawn, but content on the internet cannot be taken back,” emphasizing, “one should not attack public sentiments.”

The matter has been adjourned to next Monday, March 2, 2026.

For the unversed, the controversy of this matter erupted when Ranveer re-enacted a Daiva scene during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa from the climax of "Kantara: Chapter 1." Although Shetty laughed at the event, Singh was slammed by netizens on social media for being insensitive towards the culture and traditional rituals.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh is gearing up for the release of “Dhurandhar: The Revenger” aka “Dhurandhar 2,” which is set to hit the screens on March 19 during the Eid weekend and will clash with Yash starrer “Toxic.”
