‘Jana Nayagan’ Box Office: Thalapathy Vijay-starrer Overtakes Suriya’s ‘Karuppu’ To Become Tamil Cinema’s Biggest Opener of 2026
Thalapathy Vijay has once again flexed his megastardom, with his farewell film ‘Jana Nayagan,’ which opened to a massive response at the box office. Though the film was leaked online before its release, the massy actioner registered ₹42.70 crore on its first day with an average opening of 68.31%, emerging as the biggest Tamil opener of the year. It overtook Suriya-starrer “Karuppu” (₹15.50 crore) to achieve this feat.
Talking about the global numbers, it raked in ₹80.28Cr (India Gross: ₹50.28Cr, Overseas: ₹30.00Cr).
"Jana Nayagan" holds the fourth spot among Vijay’s biggest openers after “Leo” (₹64.80 crore), “Beast” (₹49.30 crore) and “The Greatest Of All Time” (₹44 crore).
The release of the film has become a phenomenon in Vijay’s home state Tamil Nadu as fans celebrate his farewell performance. Interestingly, he is the second sitting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister since the legendary M.G. Ramachandran to have a film release while in office.

With the current momentum and solid buzz, “Jana Nayagan” is expected to cross ₹150 crore in its extended opening weekend. However, with the arrival of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ next week at the box office, it would be interesting to see whether the superhero film will impact the Vijay-starrer.
Partially inspired by Nandamuri Balakrishna’s "Bhagvanth Kesari," the film also features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, alongside Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani in supporting roles.
Bankrolled by Venkat K. Narayana under his banner KVN Productions, the music of the film is composed by Anirudh while the cinematography is done by Sathyan Sooryan.
