‘Jana Nayagan’ Producer K Venkat Narayana on Vijay: ‘His Humility Is as Remarkable as His Legacy’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamil film “Jana Nayagan” releases on July 23 across 7,000 screens globally. The movie was produced by Venkat K Narayana’s Bengaluru-based production company KVN Productions. Made at an estimated budget of Rs 500 crore, the film faced multiple challenges over the last six months. 

In an exclusive conversation with Variety India, the founder of KVN and producer of “Jana Nayagan,” K Venkat Narayan speaks about the tough times, his bond with Thalapathy Vijay and coping with the sky-high expectations for “Jana Nayagan.” 

‘Jana Nayagan’ faced a lot of challenges, including a leak and trouble with censor certification. What has been your takeaway from this journey? 

Every big dream comes with its share of trials, but “Jana Nayagan” tested us at every turn - the censor delays, the piracy, court battles, managing the ecosystem… none of it was easy. Though the wait tested our patience, it never weakened our conviction. If anything, it strengthened our resolve to give audiences a film worthy of the wait. My biggest takeaway is that when the intent is clear and the team believes in what they’re making, no roadblock is permanent. Every challenge only strengthened our conviction that “Jana Nayagan” deserves the big screen. When you are chasing unique destinations, journeys can get tougher and a bit longer.  

How did the collaboration with Vijay happen? How did the project materialize?

What drew me in, first and foremost, was the opportunity to work with Vijay. It started with conversations that actually began back in 2024. But it was also the story itself that stayed with me from the very first narration. It had everything one looks for - a strong emotional core, commercial scale and the kind of canvas that demands to be watched on the big screen. Once we knew this would be Vijay sir’s farewell film, the responsibility only grew bigger. But you don’t say no to history when it knocks on your door. From the beginning, we were aligned with exactly what this film needed to be. And through it all, what stayed with me most was his professionalism, his discipline, his commitment that never wavered. Looking back, “Jana Nayagan” isn’t just another film in my journey. I would say it’s a landmark and one of the most fulfilling experiences. 

Given the film’s budget and the fact that it is Thalapathy Vijay’s last film, do you feel the pressure? 

Expectations shouldn’t intimidate us, they should inspire us. Yes, the scale is massive - a film of this size releasing across over 7000 screens worldwide is not a small undertaking. But we’ve seen the response building organically - the audio launch in Malaysia alone drew one of the largest gatherings, with fans traveling in from across the world to be part of it. That tells us the anticipation is real, and it only adds to the responsibility we feel to deliver a film that lives up to it. When millions are waiting, pressure becomes a purpose. 

How do you look back at the challenges the team faced and the encouraging advance bookings? 

I would rather focus on the positive side of things. What I will say is that “Jana Nayagan” belongs to the people who’ve celebrated Vijay sir for over two decades, and no delay or obstacle could take that away from them. The advance bookings reflect exactly that - the love hasn’t dipped an inch, if anything, it’s grown stronger through the wait. We’re grateful for that and that the fans will finally get to celebrate their hero on the big screen and create some unforgettable memories. Watching a film on the big screen is always a shared joy and it multiplies your experience.

This film was shot and locked well before Vijay sir’s transition into public life, so his role or his performance wasn’t altered. But there’s one thing: owing to the request from the fans - we have changed the title of Thalapathy Vijay to ‘Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay.’ There are also a few more changes in the film due to CBFC requirements and voluntary modifications and additions that we have carried out with the permission of the CBFC.  

What kind of rapport do you share with Vijay and has the equation changed post his new role? 

Working with Vijay sir was not just a privilege; it was a masterclass in discipline, humility and commitment. Every day on this project, I watched a man who has achieved everything there is to achieve in this industry and still show up with the same hunger as someone starting out. As for the equation changing after his new role, honestly, not at all. He’s the same person we have always known: grounded, respectful of everyone and completely invested in the work. In fact, I would say his humility is as remarkable as his legacy.
