‘Dune: Part Three’ vs ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ vs ‘King’: Trade Experts Weigh In on the December Box-Office Showdown (EXCLUSIVE)
The past few days have been dominated by conversations around “Dune: Part Three” and “Avengers: Doomsday,” two global tentpoles set to clash on December 18, 2026. The face-off, already being dubbed “Dunesday,” is shaping up to be one of the biggest box-office events of the year.
However, in India, the equation becomes even more interesting. Shah Rukh Khan’s “King,” directed by Siddharth Anand and co-starring Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Arshad Warsi and Raghav Juyal, arrives just a week later on December 24, turning the holiday corridor into a three-way box-office battle.
The big question remains: will the Hollywood giants impact “King,” or could the timing actually work in its favor? Variety India spoke to trade experts to decode the clash.
Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh believes there is little reason for concern, at least in the domestic market.

“Well, I don’t think so. In India, of course, ‘King’ is a far bigger movie than any Hollywood film. And I think Shah Rukh Khan returning and reuniting with Siddharth Anand is going to be one of the biggest combinations ever. This has a massive star cast as well,” he says.
Adarsh also points to Khan’s global appeal. “Internationally, Shah Rukh Khan has his own major following. Of course, there are Hollywood films that would compete. But if the diaspora, or for that matter people from other nationalities, want to watch Shah Rukh Khan, they would definitely watch it. A Shah Rukh Khan film is an event.”
Prominent trade tracker from Chennai, Ramesh Bala sees the timing as a possible advantage. “The December 18 clash between ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will definitely tighten premium screen availability in the opening week. But for ‘King,’ releasing a week later could actually work in its favor,” he explains.
He adds that the extended holiday window could boost overall footfalls. “If the Hollywood titles are front loaded, ‘King’ can capitalize on audience spillover, repeat viewing cycles and the festive uptick in India.”
Distributor and theatre owner Vishek Chauhan highlights the importance of screen allocation. “Yes, it will definitely occupy screen space. But back-to-back releases don’t mean audiences won’t come out. The product needs to be engaging and exciting, and Shah Rukh Khan in a big-ticket extravaganza is enough reason.”
He also underlines that scale and content will ultimately decide the outcome. “It becomes tougher for properties with fewer screens and easier for those with more. There are lots of negotiations before programming is locked. But people can watch multiple films at a time. ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ ran parallelly and did massive numbers. ‘Avengers’ and ‘King’ are completely different films with different sensibilities.”
With three major releases spread across a crucial holiday window, the December corridor is shaping up to be a test of scale, strategy and star power. Whether “Dunesday” dominates the conversation or “King” emerges as the eventual winner, one thing is certain — the box office is gearing up for an explosive end to the year.
