Box Office Weekend Winners: ‘Irumudi’ Soars, ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ Performs Decently, ‘Khalifa’ Underwhelms

While there were no Hindi releases last weekend, the box office was dominated by Telugu and Malayalam films, along with some holdover films that performed steadily. Although “Khalifa” and “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” were touted to dominate, “Irumudi” emerged as a pleasant surprise.

Ravi Teja's Roaring comeback with ‘Irumudi’

After a string of box-office failures like “Ravanasura,” “Tiger Nageswara Rao,” “Eagle,” “Mr. Bachchan,” “Mass Jathara” and “Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi,” Ravi Teja made a roaring comeback at the box office with “Irumudi.” The family-actioner clicked with audiences and resulted in great numbers. With an average occupancy of around 70%, the Shiva Nirvana-directed film collected ₹50.50 crore in its opening weekend.

‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ trumps ‘Khalifa’

To cash in on the upcoming Onam festivities, two Malayalam films arrived last weekend in theaters: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s “Khalifa” and Nivin Pauly’s “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit.” While “Khalifa” opened better than the actor’s previous flick “I, Nobody,” it ultimately underperformed by collecting merely ₹11.90 crore in its extended 4-day weekend.

Talking about the rom-com drama co-starring Mamitha Baiju, the film did decent business of ₹20.85 crore with an average occupancy of around 68%.

‘Awarapan 2’ and ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ stay stable

Despite losing a good chunk of screens to new releases, “Awarapan 2” and “Vishwanath and Sons” held well in their second weekend. The Emraan Hashmi-starrer earned ₹27.13 crore, taking its total collection to ₹136.25 crore. On the other hand, Tamil family drama added ₹19.05 crore in its last three days and now stands at ₹100.65 crore.

Holdover Films on gentle side

The holdover releases, “DC” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” continued to make money at the box office with minimum shows and screens. The Lokesh Kanagaraj-starrer collected ₹4.13 crore, taking its business to ₹65.62 crore. On the other hand, the Hollywood superhero flick raked in another ₹9.95 crore, taking its grand total to ₹485.35 crore.
