Bhagyashree on the ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ Outfit She Refused to Wear: ‘I Stood My Ground’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Bhagyashree reveals that one of the memorable moments from “Maine Pyar Kiya” almost played out very differently, because she refused to wear a sexy outfit for a song in the film, despite director Sooraj Barjatya’s vision for the scene.
In the song “Mere Rang Mein Rangne Wali,” there is a pivotal moment when Prem (Salman Khan) presents a daring outfit and asks her to wear it. Surprisingly, despite her character’s conservative nature, she agrees. However, the scene is filmed with a clever sense of privacy: the audience never sees her in the off-shoulder dress — only the hero does. When asked how the director was able to capture such a beautiful moment with such sensitivity, Bhagyashree says, “You know why? Because I refused to wear the outfit.”

Explaining the moment, she shares that for the director, that scene was important because it underlines their relationship, “Soorajji said this one outfit that he wants her to wear, and that kind of seals their love because she trusts him, and wears that outfit. But I said I’m not going to wear it.” Bhagyashree clarifies that the disagreement happened well before filming began and was not a last-minute issue on set.
“All this was discussed way before we started shooting for the film. I said these are things that I don’t want to do. Surprisingly, you’re remembering (the scene) now after so many years. I said, ‘Okay, she trusts him, but why should she trust the world?’ And he said that makes sense as he gets to see something that the world doesn’t get to see.”
The actress suggests that this creative compromise ultimately strengthened the scene, adding a layer of innocence and intimacy that has resonated with audiences for decades.
She also looks back fondly on her experience working with Salman Khan during the making of the blockbuster, dismissing any suggestion that he was difficult to work with as a young co-star.
“He was a mix of a protective and a naughty boy, so there were different emotions at different times, but more or less, he was more protective about me.” Bhagyashree adds that the experience of making “Maine Pyar Kiya” changed her own view of acting.
“I’ve always had very fond memories of shooting ‘Maine Pyar Kiya.’ I had no intention of getting into this profession, but shooting with Salman and Soorajji made me rethink about this profession and acting. I realized that this is something that I enjoy and would like to pursue. It’s another matter that I took a break, but this stayed with me.
