Adah Sharma On Working With Karthik Mahesh in ‘Ramarasa’: ‘I Don’t Pick Films Based On The Star Cast’ (EXCLUSIVE)

By Prathibha Joy

In 2015, when Kannada filmmaker Pavan Wadeyar brought Adah Sharma to Kannada cinema, she was only a few films old. But that was enough for him to pair her with the now late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar in "Rana Vikrama." Despite this big-ticket launch in Sandalwood. Adah did not make it to another Kannada film, until now, that is. The actress, who is better known as the star of the national award-winning film "The Kerala Story" now, is a part of the Kannada film "Ramarasa," which has been tentatively scheduled for a June 2026 release.

Ramarasa has been directed by BM Giriraj of "Jatta" and "Mythri" fame, while filmmaker Guru Deshpande limited his role to producer only. "Bigg Boss Kannada" Season 10 winner Karthik Mahesh plays the lead in the film, and the cast also includes Hebbah Patel and Sharan, among others.

Excerpts from a tete-a-tete with Adah Sharma

You are returning to Kannada cinema with 'Ramarasa,' a little over a decade since your debut with 'Rana Vikrama.'
I am back in Kannada cinema again and I am very excited about it. I chose "Ramarasa" beause I liked the idea and my character as narrated by director Giriraj, who is an award-winning filmmaker. My role is actually the surprise element of the film. I play a strong and powerful devi, whose purpose will be revealed in the film. This is only a teaser to the character; the plan is to make a standalone film with her. I thought it would be interesting; I take all my decisions intuitively anyway.

What is it about 'Ramarasa' that drew you to it? The cast is led by Karthik Mahesh, a former 'Bigg Boss Kannada' winner, but who doesn’t have the star value that your debut had. Yet you have chosen to be a part of it…
I don’t pick films based on the star cast attached to it. I believe that is the director’s prerogative. I should trust the director and that he/she is going to make a good film. I will enjoy being a part of it and maybe learn something.

You've been doing a couple of films per year since 2008, on an average. Is that a conscious choice?
For me, the number of films isn't a monthly attendance sheet. I like people to remember my performances. Characters sometimes become more real for people than the actual person. For me, it's not just quality over quantity, but also trying a mix of unpredictability, so people can't put me in a box.

Would you be okay doing other films like 'The Kerala Story' that have a polarising effect on audiences?
As an actor, my job isn’t to pass a political test. I’m not here to be left, right, centre. I’m here to be honest. If a story feels important or impactful, I’ll do it. A lot of films made on the same theme of a successful film don't get the same love. I believe only a film who's emotion connects with the audience does well at the box office
