Why Kollywood Has No Biggies in March-May Despite Summer Season Being Their Biggest Box-Office Boom
In the Tamil Film Industry, aka Kollywood, the summer months, from March-end to May-end, are considered a lucrative period as many big stars prefer this window to release their biggies. Since schools and colleges remain largely shut during this time, family audiences come in large numbers to cinema halls.
However, this year, none of the big-ticket Tamil films are scheduled for this season. On the other hand, biggies from other industries like “Dhurandhar: The Revenge,” “Bhooth Bangla” (Bollywood), “Ustaad Bhagat Singh,” “Peddi” (Tollywood), “Toxic” (Sandalwood) and “Drishyam 3,” “Patriot” (Mollywood).

The main reason for Kollywood having a quiet summer is that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections are scheduled for the same period, with Thalapathy Vijay and his party, TVK, contesting in all 234 constituencies.
“2026 happens to be the year when Tamil Nadu is going for elections. The state assembly elections are due sometime in April. Otherwise, they normally announce the release calendar by January because summer is the best possible release date for a Tamil film. Generally, the worldwide summer season varies; in Tamil Nadu, the summer season is April, May and maybe a little bit of June because schools and colleges are shut. So, that is the best season for Tamil movies, and the big box-office hits come during this phase,” says veteran industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai to Variety India, adding the announcement of Tamil releases will happen after elections dates are announced.
Ramesh Bala, another industry tracker from Chennai, shares that a few films like Suriya’s “Karuppu” and Karthi’s “Sardar 2,” along with Nayanthara starrer “Mookuthi Amman 2” might hit the screens during this phase. “If at all, there is a possibility for one movie, it can be Suriya’s “Karuppu” , which may release during the summer. Other than that, I'm not sure any other movie will release. See, the elections will take place in April. So, they may be waiting to know the election date. If the election dates are announced, then the other movies might release after the election. After the election, there is no big movie scheduled. We don't know when “Jananayagan” is going to release, but other than that, there are no Kamal (Haasan), Rajinikanth, Ajith (Kumar), Vijay movies. But Suriya might have “Karuppu” and Karthi might have a release with a movie called “Sardar 2”. So, no biggies as such, but only medium-stars and medium-budget movies. There is also a movie called “Mookuthi Amman” featuring Nayanthara, which might release.”
This year’s biggies like “Jailer 2,” “Love Insurance Kompany,” “Benz” and “Kanchana 4” are slated to release in the coming days.
