‘Undertone’: The $500K Film That Made 30 Times its Budget – Everything You Need to Know About A24’s Horror Flick

A24’s “Undertone,” the latest horror offering from the studio’s growing slate, has quietly turned into a case study in return on investment. Directed and written by Ian Tuason, the film hit screens on March 13, 2026, and has since gone on to earn nearly 30 times its modest budget.

Made on just $500,000, “Undertone” has crossed the $15 million mark in the domestic circuit, as per Box Office Mojo, making it one of the most profitable ventures in recent times. The film opened strong with $9 million in its debut weekend and followed it up with another $3 million in its second weekend, cementing its sleeper hit status early on.

The momentum did take a hit in the following week as Ryan Gosling’s “Project Hail Mary” arrived in theatres and dominated the box office. Despite the drop, “Undertone” has managed to hold its ground and push past the $15 million milestone, maintaining its impressive profit margin.

At its core, “Undertone” leans into A24’s signature slow burn, atmospheric horror, but with a distinct twist. The film follows Evy, played by Nina Kiri, a paranormal podcast host who returns to her childhood home to care for her ailing mother. What begins as a quiet, emotionally heavy homecoming soon spirals into something far more unsettling when she starts receiving eerie audio recordings that seem to mirror her own life.

As the mystery deepens, the film blurs the line between reality and psychological breakdown, relying heavily on sound and suggestion rather than conventional scares.

“Undertone” first premiered in July 2025 at the Fantasia International Film Festival, where it began generating early buzz. A24 acquired the distribution rights shortly after in a seven figure deal. The film is currently playing in the US and Canada, with releases planned in Australia and the UK, meaning its box office numbers are expected to grow further.

The film features a cast led by Nina Kiri, alongside Adam DiMarco, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, Jeff Yun, and Sarah Beaudin. With its strong theatrical run and expanding global rollout, “Undertone” is shaping up to be one of the most profitable indie horror stories in recent years.
