Antonio Banderas has joined Nicolas Cage in “True Detective” Season 5.
The duo will headline the next installment of the HBO anthology series, which is set to begin production in 2027.
The new season hails from showrunner Issa López, who helmed the Alaska-set fourth season, “Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. Season 5 will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York.
Few character details are known, but Banderas will star as Rai García while Cage will play the role of Henry Logan.
López is the writer and director, executive producing alongside writer Daniel Zelman as well as Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Cage, Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
Created by Pizzolatto, “True Detective” has been nominated for 41 Emmys and has won six, including for actors Harrelson, McConaughey, Ali and Foster. Per HBO, Season 4 was the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.
Banderas is coming off of celebrated roles in the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony” as well as the Nicole Kidman-led “Babygirl.” He also starred in “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro” and voices Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise.
Cage is best known for “Pig,” “Dream Scenario,” “Leaving Las Vegas” and, of course, “National Treasure.” “True Detective” marks just the second lead television role in his career, following his performance in the dark superhero series “Spider-Noir.”
Banderas is represented by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker. Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management and attorney Patrick Knapp.
