‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Box Office: Eyes ‘Oppenheimer’-Level Numbers, 3x Original’s Numbers on Opening Weekend

“The Devil Wears Prada 2,” out in the theaters on May 1, is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched theatrical releases, with early box-office tracking suggesting a strong debut in North America. Current estimates indicate an opening weekend in the $80 million to $95 million range, positioning the film among the higher openings for a non-franchise, adult-skewing title.

If the film lands toward the upper end of projections, it would place it in proximity to the opening weekend performance of “Oppenheimer,” which debuted at $83 million domestically. While the two films operate in different tonal spaces, the comparison underlines a broader trend of adult-skewing films finding theatrical traction when positioned as event releases.

For “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” the opening weekend will be critical in shaping its overall box-office trajectory. The original “The Devil Wears Prada” opened to a modest $27.5 million before building through sustained word of mouth. It went on to collect $124.7 million in North America and $326.6 million worldwide over its lifetime, according to Box Office Mojo.

The sequel enters a different theatrical landscape, where front-loaded openings tend to define performance. A debut in the projected $80 million to $95 million range would not only significantly outpace the original’s start but could also set the film on course to surpass its predecessor’s lifetime domestic total, depending on holdover trends.

The film benefits from strong brand recall and the return of its central cast, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt. That combination positions it as a high-interest release among urban and legacy audiences.

Without reliance on large-scale spectacle, the film’s long-term run will depend on audience reception and repeat value. With tracking pointing to a strong start, the opening weekend will play a key role in determining whether “The Devil Wears Prada 2” can convert early interest into sustained box-office performance.
