Taylor Swift Ditches YouTube, ‘Opalite’ to premiere on Apple Music

By Garima Sharma

Taylor Swift is rolling out "Opalite", the second visualizer off her album "The Life Of A Showgirl" on Apple Music and Spotify ahead of YouTube. Fans can catch the premiere on Apple Music and Spotify Premium starting February 6 at 8 a.m. E.T. (6:30 pm IST)

Swift built up the hype with a countdown timer on her website, letting everyone know when to tune in.

The video stays on Apple Music and Spotify Premium for two days before it finally lands on YouTube at 8 a.m. ET on February 8.

She’s done something similar before. For her lead single, "The Fate of Ophelia," the video played in theaters first and then showed up on YouTube a couple of days later. "Opalite" is the second video from her album The Life of a Showgirl, which dropped last October.

And that’s not all. Swift also announced a blue pearlescent "Opalite" vinyl, available for pre-order in her online store.

It ties right into the single’s launch and gives fans another collectible. So, what’s behind the move away from YouTube? YouTube stopped sharing its streaming data with Billboard in December, and Billboard now gives more weight to paid streams than to ad-supported ones.

Paid streams get a better ratio in the chart, 1:2.5 instead of 1:3. Swift fans were quick to notice and plenty of people online are saying she’s making a play for stronger chart numbers by focusing on platforms that count more.

Here’s how some people are reacting to this and calling her ‘obsessed with numbers’:

She’s so desperate it’s embarrassing  she probably got paid to not put it on YouTube (@nowiastt)

Taylor dropping the Opalite video at 8AM ET is hilarious because Swifties will set alarms, skip breakfast, and act like it’s a global summit. Meanwhile Apple Music and Spotify are about to experience the loudest collective refresh button abuse in history. (@damola017)

She said to hell with a YouTube premiere since those streams don’t count anymore (@_melayela_)
