From ‘Parimala And Co’ To ‘Hi’: Tamil Industry Rolls Out Lighthearted Entertainers In 2026

Tamil cinema’s commercial potboilers are known for their high entertainment value and unique stories, so much so that many of these films are remade in other industries’ local languages. However, in the last few years, there’s been a pivot toward films with hard-hitting topics that have social relevance. Films like “Madras,” “Pariyerum Perumal,” “Asuran” and “Karnan,” among others, went on to become trendsetters because of the topical social issues they took on. Big stars like Rajinikanth, Suriya, Dhanush and several others were part of projects that called out social atrocities that oppressed communities have to contend with.

While films dealing with social issues won the hearts of cinephiles, the lion’s share of such films was just a rip-off of some critically acclaimed ones. With the industry switching to realistic films, the lack of adequate popcorn entertainers, feel-good dramas, love stories and no-brainers that used to attract audiences was being acutely felt. In what would seem like a course correction, Pradeep Ranganathan’s “Love Today,” “Dragon” and “Dude, offered some respite from this overload of ‘meaningful’ films, and now it looks like the industry is all ready to dish out a serving of small films that promise big entertainment.

The first hit of 2026, “Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil,” starring Jiiva, was a dark comedy that centered around an old man’s death and a young girl’s marriage. “Youth,” another hit this year, starring Kevin, was a teen drama. Abishan Jeevinth and Anaswara Rajan’s “With Love” was also a successful young romantic drama this year. The stupendous success of Radikaa Sarathkumar’s “Thaai Kizhavi”, a fun family drama, turned out to be the saving grace for exhibitors earlier this year, while “Blast,” an action film with high moments, featuring Arjun, Preity Mukhundhan and Abhirami, is the latest hit in Tamil. The back-to-back success of content-oriented, small-budget entertaining films has rekindled hopes for the industry. Here’s a list of promising small movies that are expected to up the entertainment stakes this year.

Parimala and Co

The film, directed by Pandiraaj, starring Urvashi, Jayaram, Yogi Babu, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy and Mysskin among others, is billed as a dark comedy that revolves around a middle-class family and a murder. How the family members smartly handle a complicated situation forms the crux of the story. Its trailer has already received a thumbs-up from movie buffs. There’s much anticipation for the combination scenes between Jayaram and Urvashi. “Parimala and Co” hits the screens on June 5.

Gatta Kusthi 2

The makers of “Gatta Kusthi” announced at the success meet in 2022 that a sequel would be made to the action comedy soon. Chella Ayyavu has wielded the megaphone this time as well for the film that stars a bevy of actors apart from the lead pair, Vishnu Vishal and Aishwarya Lekshmi. Going by the trailer that was unveiled recently, the sequel follows the template of the first part, with ample comedy, wrestling moments and emotions. “Gatta Kusthi 2” will be released on July 3.

Idhayam Murali

The title announcement of the film, which was a year ago, received an overwhelming response. Tipped as a breezy romantic drama, it is expected to be Atharvaa’s comeback vehicle. Fahadh Faasil’s cameo and Thaman’s music are the highlights of this film, which includes Preity Mukhundhan, Kayadu Lohar and Niharika MM. Directed by Aakash Baskaran, “Idhayam Murali” will be released on July 10.

Hi
Popular lyricist Vishnu Edavan surprised everyone when he announced his decision to direct the film “Hi,” headlined by Nayanthara and Kavin. Jen Martin’s music is expected to be one of the prime attractions of the romantic drama. The uber-cool posters of the film have already generated good buzz among moviegoers. The film, which was initially planned for release in April, is likely to be out toward the end of the year.

Mookuthi Amman 2

The sequel to the six-year-old film directed by RJ Balaji has Sundar C at its helm. Nayanthara plays the titular role this time, too, in the film, which is likely to be released this year. The fantasy entertainer features a stellar cast that includes the likes of Regina Cassandra, Duniya Vijay, Yogi Babu and Abhinaya, among others.

Meesaya Murukku 2

Musician Adhi of Hiphop Tamizha tasted success when he became a director with “Meesaya Murukku” in 2017. He went on to act in a few more films and helmed three other projects as well. Now, he is ready with the much-hyped “Meesaya Murukku 2.” A few songs from the film are already out, and one of them is a chart-topper. The musical drama’s narration is said to be on the lines of the first part that young cinephiles enjoyed.
