SS Rajamouli Launches India’s Largest Motion Capture Facility at Annapurna Studios, Uses It for His Next Epic ‘Varanasi’

By Sakshi Navare

SS Rajamouli has been in the headlines for months for his next big-ticket film “Varanasi”. Now, the filmmaker has another major announcement, the launch of A&M MoCap Lab, India’s largest motion-capture facility, built at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad. Rajamouli shared a video announcing the launch on his personal social media handles.

Sharing the video, Rajamouli wrote, “For years, our stories pushed the limits of our canvas. Today we stretch it further. Excited to launch A&M MoCap Lab, India’s largest motion-capture facility at @AnnapurnaStudios, set up in collaboration with @mihiravisualabs and @Animatrik. Looking forward for storytellers to explore its limitless potential in animation, live action, gaming and more.”

Described as India’s most advanced motion-capture facility, the space was inaugurated by the “RRR” director on February 25. Adding to the excitement, reports suggest that Rajamouli shot a key scene of the Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra Jonas starrer “Varanasi” using the technology at this lab. He had previously launched India’s first Dolby Cinema processing facility at the same studio.

“India has always had some of the world’s best technicians contributing to major global productions, but what we lacked was an advanced facility right here at home. When I look back at some of my previous films like 'Bahubali' and 'Eega', I reminisce how I could have made them even better if I had access to motion-capture technology back then in India,” SS Rajamouli said, as per THR.

“With the introduction of A&M’s motion-capture technology, that gap has finally been bridged. This will change how Indian filmmakers envision and execute their stories, as we will no longer need to outsource. I have visited several motion-capture facilities across the world, but what A&M offers is the perfect blend of precision and performance. We utilized this facility in the making of crucial sequences in 'Varanasi', and the results were simply fantastic,” SS Rajamouli added.
