Priyadarshan Reveals: ‘Farah Khan Once Told Vidya Balan She Can’t Dance And She Turned It Into a Challenge’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Filmmaker Priyadarshan is revisiting one of the most memorable chapters from "Bhool Bhulaiyaa," and it involves Vidya Balan’s now iconic performance in “Mere Dholna.” What went on to become a defining moment in the film and in Balan’s career almost did not come easy, as the actor had to push past doubts around her dancing abilities to deliver it.

In an exclusive chat with Variety India, Priyadarshan recalled how Balan told her filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan had once told her she cannot dance and when "Mere Dholna" came out, Khan appreciated her.

“This is very interesting because there was a time when people used to think that Vidya (Balan) cannot dance. And she told me I will take it as a big challenge. Vidya practised for 35–40 days just to do this song,” the filmmaker said.

Priyadarshan added, “And the one who is dancing with her is Vineeth Radhakrishnan, who is one of the finest classical dancers of the country. But she matched his energy. And one day Vidya came and told me I will never forget this song in my life because someone who once told me I cannot dance, Farah Khan, has appreciated me for it. And Shobhana was also called and praised. She said I will never be able to repeat it but this is the best thing you have done for me. So this is something I remember very well.”

The song went on to become one of the most iconic moments in the film, with Balan’s performance being widely celebrated for its intensity and precision. Her portrayal of the possessed dancer not only elevated the narrative but also showcased a side of her that audiences had not seen before.
