‘Koffee With Karan’: Iconic One-Liners That Became Part of Indian Pop Culture

It is no conjecture but a fact that “Koffee With Karan,” the celebrity chat show hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar, is coming to an end. The final season, which has celebrities sipping hot coffee and (hopefully) spilling hotter tea on the couch, starting with Salman Khan, premieres on October 14. There’s no denying that “Koffee With Karan,” fondly abbreviated to “KWK,” has given Indian pop culture some of its most iconic one-liners.

In fact, the decreasing salaciousness and fire in the one-liners can actually be used to trace the trajectory of celebrities’ hesitance to be themselves and play safe, owing to social media trolling and backlash. A walk down memory lane is clearly due.

“You know, Karan, the chances of me waking up in the morning and turning into you are less, but waking up in the morning with you is more. At least, that’s what everyone says':  Shah Rukh Khan (Season 2 Episode 1)

Some of the best lines on “Koffee With Karan” came from Shah Rukh Khan, whose wit and charm hit the spot just as well as his romance. He was the show’s first-ever guest alongside Kajol and has appeared seven times. One of his most iconic lines on “KWK” came in Season 2, when he appeared alongside Kajol and Rani Mukerji. When asked by Karan Johar in the rapid-fire what he would do if he woke up one morning as Karan Johar, Khan sassed both his friend and the audience, who often joke at their expense, with one answer!

"I am a virgin, and I sleep alone. I'm going to save myself for the one that I get married to": Salman Khan (Season 4 Episode 1)

The man who gave us “It’s done, bro,” gave us the most shocking insight into his personal life. The eternal bachelor opened the show’s Season 4 and told host Karan Johar that he is a virgin and sleeps alone, a statement that follows him as a joke even now.

“Ranbir Kapoor should endorse a condom brand”: Deepika Padukone (Season 3 Episode 3)

The year was 2010. “Koffee With Karan” Season 3 was on air. It had been three years since Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor’s debut in “Saawariya” and a few months since Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor ended their relationship. The third episode, where the two actresses went all out talking about their relationship with Kapoor, became one of the show’s most infamous episodes.

“Preity Zinta talks too much. She should learn to talk less”: Rani Mukerji (Season 1 Episode 2)

Back when celebrities used “KWK” to address industry feuds, Rani Mukerji had cleared the air that she and Preity Zinta were cordial as co-stars but not really friends. When Johar played a clip where Zinta called out Kareena Kapoor (also on the couch) for acknowledging her only when Johar was around, Mukerji had famously said that Zinta has a lot of opinions and should learn to talk less.

“Jo Bhagwan nahi deta, woh doctor de deta hai”: Rakhi Sawant (Season 2 Episode 12)

In 2007, Rakhi Sawant, fresh off her “Bigg Boss” Season 1 stint, appeared on “Koffee With Karan” in what became one of the most iconic episodes of the series because of her unabashed one-liners. She made the definitive statement about cosmetic procedures when she said, “What God doesn’t give you, a doctor can.” Her “Bigg Boss” housemates, Rahul Roy and Carol Gracias, joined her for the rapid-fire round.

“I got my accent from the same place Kareena’s boyfriend gets it from”: Priyanka Chopra (Season 3 Episode 7)

This line from a 2010 episode is part of the ancient lore! In an earlier episode, Kareena Kapoor had asked where Priyanka Chopra gets her accent from. When Johar told Chopra, who was sitting on the couch with Kapoor’s former boyfriend, Shahid Kapoor, about this, her reply sassed both Kareena and her then-boyfriend, Saif Ali Khan.

“Aishwarya Rai is plastic. Shraddha Kapoor should probably eat something”: Emraan Hashmi (Season 4 Episode 9)

Hashmi arrived on the Season 4 episode with his uncle, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, and the couch became the epicenter of some pretty unabashed statements that shocked the industry and fans alike. But two of them came from Hashmi, who refused to play it safe in his rapid-fire when asked for the word association with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shraddha Kapoor. Of course, he won the Koffee hamper.

“What does Akshay have that the Khans don’t?” “A few extra inches”: Twinkle Khanna (Season 5 Episode 2)

Husband and wife duo Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna were an absolute riot on the Koffee couch, eliciting laughs galore from host and friend Karan Johar and the audience. But things got quite spicy when Mrs. Funnybones was asked what something her husband has that his contemporaries don’t, and she said, without hesitation, “A few extra inches.” Of height, she meant!

“First thing that comes to your mind when I say ‘John Abraham’?” “Expressionless”: Kareena Kapoor Khan (Season 2 Episode 4)

Kareena Kapoor Khan is in the business of dropping iconic expressions, both facial and verbal. Even if a bit tamed now, she brought out her Regina George on the “Koffee with Karan” couch when she called John Abraham “expressionless” during a rapid-fire round.

“I think Vicky Kaushal and I will look nice together”: Katrina Kaif in Season 6 Episode 5

Several instances have led to the “KWK” couch being called the “Manifestation Couch,” and this is probably at the top of the list. In 2018, Katrina Kaif, in that iconic yellow dress, told Karan Johar that she and Vicky Kaushal would look good together. When Kaushal was shown the clip later, he swooned! Cut to 2021, and the two were married.

“Women like it, need it, want it as much as they (men) do”: Vidya Balan in Season 4 Episode 1

Vidya Balan has never shied away from telling it like it is, whether through the strong female characters she embodies on screen or off-screen. During her appearance on “KWK” alongside her “Shaadi Ke Side Effects” co-star Farhan Akhtar, Johar’s rapid-fire question asked her to cite the one thing that men didn’t know about women. And Balan’s answer was surely fire.

“You are the flagbearer of nepotism” and “Movie mafia”: Kangana Ranaut in Season 5 Episode 16

Not just one of the most iconic lines, but one that sparked a debate and movement across the film industry that continues to burn even now. Kangana Ranaut sat across from Karan Johar on his show and spoke the “N-word,” calling him the flagbearer of nepotism. In fact, she remarked that if ever a biopic was made about her life, Johar would play the movie mafia!
