‘Jana Nayagan’: Will The Delay of the Thalapathy Vijay-starrer Impact Its Box-Office Performance?

Thalapathy Vijay starrer “Jana Nayagan” holds a special place in the hearts of fans, as the movie marks his last big-screen appearance before he makes his full-time transition into politics. While it was scheduled to release on January 9, during the Pongal festival weekend, it did not get clearance from CBFC, and the release did not happen. As the makers are yet to announce the new release date, the question remains: Will this movie enjoy the same craze at the box office as it would have had it been released during the Pongal weekend?

Prominent trade experts from the Tamil industry have shared their thoughts with Variety India about Vijay’s final movie and its box-office prospects.

Veteran trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai remarks that the Pongal weekend was huge for “Jana Nayagan” and no other release date will have that kind of advantage. “It was supposed to come on January 9th, the super-duper date, because of the Pongal holidays. During Pongal, it’s a five-day holiday. So, a five-day public holiday would mean astronomical collections that the film could have done during that period. There will be a dent in the opening, because now the film has to release on a regular Friday or Thursday and it won’t have that kind of advantage,” asserts Pillai.

On the other hand, industry tracker Ramesh Bala explains that, unlike the Pongal weekend, where “Jana Nayagan” was clashing with Sivakarthikeyan’s “Parasakthi,” the Thalapathy-starrer might have a solo release now. “So, nothing like a Pongal holiday, because we are not going to get that many continuous holidays during any other festival. Certainly, the holiday collection will not be possible whenever ‘Jana Nayagan’ releases. One thing is, it may be a solo release. During Pongal, there was also ‘Parasakthi.’ But now, I think whenever ‘Jana Nayagan’ is going to release on an ordinary weekend, it may be a solo release. So, it may get more screens than it would have during Pongal, which had two movies. So that may be an advantage of a solo release, but the non-holiday will offset it,” shares Bala.

Directed by H. Vinoth, the political action-thriller also features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju in key roles.
