‘Dunesday’ Showdown: ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Set for a High-Stakes Box Office Clash
As the “Dune: Part Three” trailer hit screens yesterday, the world now awaits the first proper full-length trailer of Marvel’s tentpole film “Avengers: Doomsday.” Both films, backed by two of the biggest studios — Disney’s Marvel and Warner Bros. — are set to clash at the box office on December 18, 2026.
But the industry sentiment around this showdown is far from straightforward. According to a Variety report, it’s a classic case of mixed signals. On one hand, it’s an embarrassment of riches for an industry that often laments the lack of exciting theatrical offerings. On the other, the strategy feels questionable, with an enormous amount of firepower being deployed at once. This has inevitably led to one key question: will either of the two potential blockbusters shift its release date to avoid the clash?
At present, neither film is expected to move — a surprising development for box office watchers, especially given the overlap in their target audiences. Both films are mounted on massive budgets and cater largely to male-skewing fanbases, unlike the last major clash between Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which appealed to distinctly different audiences with minimal overlap.
Popularly dubbed “Dunesday,” this clash has one amusing similarity — nearly every major Hollywood star seems to feature in one of the two films. “Dune: Part Three” boasts a star-studded cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Rebecca Ferguson. Meanwhile, “Avengers: Doomsday” brings together a massive ensemble of Avengers and X-Men, including Robert Downey Jr. (returning not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom), Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Pugh (making it a big weekend for the British star), Patrick Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Ian McKellen, Letitia Wright and Channing Tatum.

Technically, “Dune: Part Three” was the first to secure the December 18 release date. “Avengers: Doomsday,” initially slated for May 2025, was later pushed to the same December slot due to multiple factors, including the Hollywood strikes. As per insiders, “Doomsday” currently holds the upper hand and is predicted to be the year’s highest-grossing release. Disney has already kicked off an aggressive marketing campaign, including a live countdown clock ticking down to the film’s premiere.
“Dune: Part Three,” on the other hand, may not yet match that box office pedigree, but the franchise is clearly on an upward trajectory. “Part One,” released in October 2021, earned $410 million globally despite a simultaneous HBO Max debut. “Part Two,” which arrived in November 2024, turned into a theatrical juggernaut with $714 million worldwide. The third installment also benefits from IMAX exclusivity for three weeks, with director Denis Villeneuve shooting the film using the company’s cameras.
If both films intend to hold on to their current release date, there are limited alternatives. December 11 is already occupied by “Jumanji 3,” raising concerns that the threequel could be overshadowed by the two giants arriving a week later.
Meanwhile, December 4 is booked by Universal’s “Violent Night 2,” a window neither Disney nor Warner Bros. is likely to consider for their tentpole releases. Despite concerns from rivals and exhibitors that both films might perform better with more breathing room, most believe there is enough space for the two behemoths to co-exist. The holiday season in the West typically drives strong theatrical turnout, and audiences could return to cinemas to watch both films, even if not on the same day. Additionally, the calendar offers a relatively clear runway through January and February.
Theatre owners, however, remain cautiously optimistic. Marvel’s recent track record has been inconsistent, but its biggest post-pandemic successes have come from large-scale team-ups like 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($1.9 billion) and 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($1.33 billion). Meanwhile, the last Avengers outing, “Avengers: Endgame,” generated massive global numbers, underscoring the franchise’s enduring appeal.
On the other side, “Dune: Part Two” opened strong with $80 million domestically and $178 million worldwide, eventually building into a major success. With “Part Three” serving as the saga’s conclusion, expectations are even higher.
“We’ve been desperate for all these years for volume,” says exhibitor Chris Randleman of FlixBrewhouse. “Here is volume. It’s the best-case scenario ever. You’re so busy you don’t know what to do with yourself. It’s awesome.”
