Daniel Radcliffe Makes Emotional Plea Ahead Of ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot: “Don’t Make Us Ghosts In Their Lives”

One of the biggest projects currently taking shape in the West is the “Harry Potter” series being developed for HBO Max. The streamer took the world by storm last year when it first confirmed the spin-off show and later announced the cast. Although this is an entirely new adaptation with a fresh cast and a different long-form approach from the films led by Daniel Radcliffe, the announcements were instantly compared to the original movie franchise. Radcliffe has now addressed this directly, urging fans not to draw constant comparisons that place undue pressure on the new actors or make him feel like a “spectral presence” looming over the show.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Radcliffe spoke about the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV reboot and expressed his excitement about the project. When asked what advice he would give the young cast, he recalled how, following the initial announcement, people “around the world” urged others to “look after these kids.”

Responding to that sentiment, Radcliffe made a heartfelt request. He said that if people truly want to protect the new stars, “one of the things you can do for me is not ask about us — me, Emma, Rupert — all the time.” He added that he would prefer not to be “weird spectral phantoms in these children’s lives,” emphasizing that the series is “going to be a new thing.”

Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton were announced in May 2025 as the new Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively.

Radcliffe also shared that he, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have stayed in touch and discussed how surreal it feels to see a new generation begin the same journey they started years ago. While they have not had extensive conversations specifically about the show, they all share similar emotions about it.

“It’s one of those situations where I think we all just know how the others feel, because we’re also feeling it,” Radcliffe said. “You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them. That’s the impulse that I think we mainly all have.”

The “Harry Potter” TV reboot does not yet have a confirmed release date. The series is being developed by Francesca Gardiner, best known for her work on “Succession.”
