‘Canada, U.S., Germany, Ireland — As a DJ, I Now Travel the World in a Very Different Way’: Sunny Leone
Sunny Leone is living it up as a celebrity DJ, hosting Bollywood-style events in India and abroad. Sunny, who came to India 15 years ago, has built a solid career for herself as a host, actor and now a DJ. She says she was always fascinated by DJs and is a huge music buff. Excerpts from a conversation with Variety India.
From “Bigg Boss” to movies and now a DJ. How do you keep reinventing yourself?
Reinventing. I'm not sure if I see myself as reinventing. I would be someone who is just evolving. And I mean, at this moment, we have films, television, shows and DJs and so many different things. It's just about harnessing what's around us and being able to do almost everything.
Were you always inclined towards DJing? Did you, in your wildest dreams, imagine yourself as a DJ?
So, I have always loved music. And I was always fascinated by DJs and hosting, totally different things like that. And, you know, performing. So, when this was proposed, I definitely wanted to jump on this and learn and be able to enjoy it. When I do events, it ends up being the most fun because I'm in my element. I am in my own bubble. I'm listening to my favorite songs. I'm playing it for everybody out there.

Did you have some comfort songs when you felt low? What kind of music do you listen to at home?
Down or low? I think I haven't exactly felt that low where it took over my entire day or an evening. I haven't felt like that in a very long time. Based on my life’s experiences, small things that might bother other people, they don't necessarily always bother me. Every day is different. With my children, I play a lot of jazz. I play a lot of music from the 1950s. I play a lot of 90s music when I'm around the children. So, that's something that I love doing. You know your kids are going to have their own interests, but you feel like introducing them to a variety of music. It helps them to recognize instruments, notes and sounds.
Do you listen to any of the current popular pop acts like BTS, Ariana Grande, and all?
Yes, I love pop music and dance to such songs when I am working out. It is so much fun when you know the words, it gets you pumping, and how! One of the things I actually do while I am training and running is listen to all kick-ass songs made by female artists. I love it.
Do Daniel (Weber) and you have similar tastes in music?
Daniel loves rock music. He also plays the guitar. Rock is his favorite genre. The children, they love anything from 90s rock to disco. You know, music was great back then!
You have got a lot of positive reviews for “Kennedy.” Are you hoping to get better roles henceforth in movies?
I feel very, very fortunate that a lot of the reviews that I have read, people have been saying amazing things and I really am appreciative of the same.
Are you hoping for better roles...
That would definitely be the goal in life. My motto is to keep working on projects that I love. And I definitely am looking forward to seeing what comes or what doesn't come. I also want to know how much more I need to work on myself, or what I need to do to get some roles that would be absolutely amazing to work on.
Are you satisfied with how life has turned out so far?
Oh, I am very happy. I mean, life doesn't get any better than this. Your family is happy and healthy and you are healthy.
In the coming months, where are you planning your DJ shows?
All over the world. We just booked Paris, yes, last night. I got it down. Then, we went to Canada, the U.S., Germany, and where else? There are so many. Ireland, and just all over. It's just so amazing that people have responded the way that they have, and they've enjoyed the sets that I've created. I now get to travel the world in a very different way.
