‘Bridgerton Season 4’, Part Two Sees Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha Anchor the Series’ Most Earnest Finale Yet: Streaming Review

“My eyes search for you in every room I enter. My heart beats when you are near,” Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) passionately tells Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) in the second part of “Bridgerton Season 4” Part Two. While all seasons of the blockbuster Regency romance have their own charm, this one is as classic as it gets. The last few episodes deal with how Benedict Bridgerton handles the class divide, an issue equally prevalent in modern dating and marriages. However, what sets apart the final four episodes of "Bridgerton Season 4" is the emotional journey of the entire Bridgerton family.

Benedict, his mother Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and his sister Francesca (Hannah Dodd) navigate love, loss, mourning and agony in a relatable, engaging and immersive manner making it one of the best "Bridgerton" season finales ever.

There is a lot happening in the last four episodes of “Bridgerton” Season Four. Fans will be glued on to how Francesca deals with the death of Lord Kilmartin (Victor Alli) as her mother Violet rediscovers the joy of finding love once again with Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis). The second part begins from where he asks her if she would be a part of his life as a mistress. Viewers see how pained Benedict is understanding how much his proposal has hurt Sophie and their bond.

Thompson and Ha certainly elevate this season with their earnest performances. Due credit must be given to the writers for creating wonderful arcs for not only the two leads but also the ensemble characters.

Benedict, the rake of the Bridgerton household, comes into his own in the series as he questions why society must determine how we live. We see him as a caring brother for his sisters Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and Francesca. Thompson is excellent when he lashes out at the physician who comes to examine Francesca or when he admits to Sophie that he has been intimate with both men and women. Ha puts in a good restrained performance as Sophie who knows she does not want to be a mistress no matter how beautiful a life with her Benedict might seem to be. Yet, her love is unselfish staying by his side whenever the Bridgerton family or he needs her.

Benedict and Sophie watch out for each other even though they are acutely aware of the insurmountable class divide challenging them. The two stars bring in passion, tenderness, yearning and agony with great nuance and skill. Like every "Bridgerton" season, this couple too has its share of steamy moments but it feels like a miniscule part of the story. Sophie Baek is shown as a woman aware of the ways of the world, even in matters of sexual intimacy. This is a bit surprising given all the English maidens in the series have been shown as rather clueless. The whole sub-plot about the 'Maids War' in the 'Ton' makes a subtle statement on how domestic helps contribute a lot more to a household than they are credited for.

"Bridgerton 4" will also be remembered for Dodd's and Gemmell's performances as two women: one who guilty of not birthing a child and the other who constantly battles her personal desires while caring for her family.

Tom Verica, Jaffar Mahmood and Gia-Rayne B.Harris are the directors of the season. Jess Brownell is the showrunner for the season aided by six other writers. Even as the women compete with each other for various reasons, the sense of sisterhood in "Bridgerton 4" is heart-warming. The women try to overcome grief, find their voice, stick to principles and also learn to let go for the greater good.

There are some surprises like Lady Whistledown announcing that she is retiring as a gossip columnist and the budding connection between Francesca and Michaela (Masali Baduza) who is the cousin of John Stirling. The season culminates in a classic Cindrella style with Benedict discovering that Sophie Baek is indeed his lady from the masquerade. As the Bridgerton family again triumphs over all the odds to marry the one they truly love, you’re left feeling contented like one of the guests at the Queen's ball.

The series is airing on Netflix.
