Anubhuti Kashyap: ‘My Brothers Anurag and Abhinav Kashyap’s Ups and Downs Prepared Me To Not Expect Too Much From The Industry’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Filmmaker Anubhuti Kashyap is fresh off the release of her Netflix film “Accused,” which stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta in the lead roles. The film, which premiered on Netflix last week, has managed to grab attention while also sparking a range of reactions.

In an exclusive chat with Variety India, Kashyap spoke about navigating the mixed response to the film, how watching her brothers push through industry struggles, prepared her for filmmaking realities and what she is working on next.

Kashyap admitted she is still processing the conversation around the film. While acknowledging criticism from some viewers, she said striking the right balance as a filmmaker does not always work out the way one hopes.

“I mean, I know it’s not entirely new, but there is a very small population of people who are seeing it as the film, maybe not addressing the MeToo aspect responsibly. That is something I did not expect, because for me the film is not about that anyway. So yeah, that was a little surprising. And thankfully, it’s a very small section,” she said.

Asked what keeps her going amid such reactions, Kashyap spoke about the larger challenges of getting films made and how her life experiences have helped her stay grounded.

“I feel it’s also the experience of life. I’m not saying others aren’t experienced, but I still keep a certain vision alive. I guess I’ve had experience in that. While I was in the corporate sector and later assisting in the film industry during those initial years, I saw my brothers go through a lot of ups and downs. I think all of that prepared me to not expect too much,” she said.

Anubhuti is the sister of filmmakers Anurag and Abhinav Kashyap, both of whom have navigated their own share of struggles within the industry. When asked whether witnessing their battles to get projects made ever discouraged her, she said it has not — at least this far.

“So far, it hasn’t demotivated me. Maybe, because I wasn’t expecting too much in the first place. Let’s see how it goes. It’s possible the industry shuts down and we’ll all be demotivated. But they are two brave men,” she said.

Looking ahead, Kashyap revealed she is currently juggling multiple projects, keeping different genres in development so that she always has options if one does not move forward.

“I’m between two or three scripts right now. One is a love story, another is a drama thriller, and there is also a series. It’s too early to say much,” she said.

When asked which projects are currently in advanced stages of development, she added, “There’s a drama thriller and a love story that are in advanced stages. That’s why I’m also working on something in a different genre in parallel, in case somebody says no. You always have to have options.”
