‘America America 2’: Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar Returns to a Beloved World with Shanvi Srivastava, Nirup Bhandari and Pruthvi Ambaar (EXCLUSIVE)

For a generation of Kannada audiences, “America America” is more than a film. Its songs, friendships, romance and images of a distant America became part of the cultural memory of the late 1990s. Thirty years later, Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar returns to that title with “America America 2,” which releases in theatres on September 11.

The trailer, unveiled recently, has brought the film back into conversation, introducing a new love triangle involving Nudi, Ninaad and Neel, played by Shanvi Srivastava, Nirup Bhandari and Pruthvi Ambaar. While the title naturally invites comparisons with the 1997 classic, Chandrashekhar has made it clear that he never set out to continue its story.

“Except for Mano Murthy, Rajesh Krishnan and me, nobody from ‘America America’ is part of this film. It is not a continuation of the characters of Surya, Shashank or Bhoomika. This is a completely different story. The only common thread is that both are love triangles,” he says.

That separation forms the key to “America America 2.” Chandrashekhar doesn't want to reproduce the success of the original; he wants to explore what the same emotional territory means three decades later.

Why return to ‘America America’ now?

The filmmaker had several opportunities to make a sequel but stayed away from the idea. The new film emerged only when Sahana Vijayakumar's novel “Kshame” gave him a story that he felt justified revisiting the title. “I had opportunities to make a sequel over the years, but I never wanted to. Only when this story came to me did the title feel right. People may think it's a business strategy, but the title suited the story,” Chandrashekhar says.

The world around the title has changed considerably since 1997. The original captured a period when America represented aspiration, migration and the possibility of a radically different life. Today, international travel and life abroad have become far more familiar, but the emotional complications of leaving home haven't changed.

“New stories always rise from old stories. The definition of love may change, but desire, anger, attachment and jealousy remain the same. Human emotions don't become outdated,” he says.

That becomes the bridge between the two films. “America America 2” doesn't bring back the characters audiences remember; it brings back the questions that made the original resonate.

A new America, a new visual language

The trailer also signals a clear visual departure from the original. S K Rao's cinematography gives the new film a polished contemporary look, with Mysuru and Seattle providing contrasting spaces for the story. “America is one of the most film-friendly countries because of its infrastructure. It has become more expensive now, but Seattle isn't just a location here; it becomes a character,” Chandrashekhar says. 

Rao’s camera captures that scale while keeping the focus on the characters. The trailer moves between expansive American landscapes and intimate emotional moments, giving the film a sense of movement without turning the locations into mere travel imagery.

The sound of the new America America

Music remains another important link between the two films. Mano Murthy, who composed the music for the original, returns for “America America 2,” while Nakul Abhyankar handles the background score.

The combination gives the film an interesting musical identity. Murthy brings the creative continuity audiences associate with the original, while Abhyankar's score gives the trailer a distinctly contemporary dramatic pulse.

The weight of a familiar title

The actors know they are stepping into a title that carries expectations. Shanvi Srivastava has described the experience as both exciting and intimidating. At the same time, she sees Nudi as a departure from the roles she has played so far. “I have never played a role like this in my career. The performances of my co-stars as well as the work of the technical crew have also been exceptional,” she says.

Pruthvi Ambaar says, “Even today, “America America” remains in people's hearts because of its songs, visuals and dialogues. It is a great privilege to act in a film with the same iconic title.”

Nirup Bhandari brings his own connection to that legacy. “For the first time, the trailer of my film has come out in my hometown where I grew up. Mysuru is also a part of this film along with America. Those who watched the old ‘America America’ will bring their children to watch this film,” he says.

September 11 will bring the real test

Chandrashekhar knows the comparison is unavoidable. But rather than recreate the past, he has chosen to revisit the emotional core through new characters, a different generation and a changed world. “America America 2” arrives in theatres on September 11, 2026, carrying a title that belongs to 1997, but a story that belongs to today.
