Ahead of Ryan Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’ Release, A Look at How Space Fictions Performed At Indian Box Office
Ryan Gosling’s big-ticket venture “Project Hail Mary,” which enjoyed a great opening in international markets, is set to hit Indian screens this Thursday (March 26). The Hollywood sci-fi adventure flick was delayed by a week here to avoid a clash with Ranveer Singh’s “Dhurandhar: The Revenge.”
This decision has benefited “Project Hail Mary,” as the film has received a great response in advance booking. As the film hits the screens this week, Variety India looks at the box-office performances of past Space-fi movies in India
Sunshine - 2007

The Danny Boyle directorial featuring Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis, Chris Evans, Troy Garity, Cillian Murphy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong and Michelle Yeoh is set in 2057 and follows the crew of a spacecraft on a mission to deliver a stellar bomb to reignite the dying Sun. During its release, it collected close to ₹14 lakhs in India.
Elysium - 2013

The Matt Damon-starrer dystopian film is directed by Neill Blomkamp. Also featuring Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura and William Fichtner, “Elysium” raked in ₹28 crore at the Indian box office.
Gravity - 2013

The Alfonso Cuarón directorial narrates the story of astronauts who attempt to return to Earth after their Space Shuttle is destroyed in orbit. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, the film earned ₹33.89 crore.
Interstellar - 2014

Set in a dystopian future, the epic space-fiction flick features the ensemble cast of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn and Michael Caine. The Christopher Nolan-directed film collected ₹42.24 crore in its theatrical run.
The Martian - 2015

The film, which depicts an astronaut's struggle and survival on Mars after being left behind and NASA's efforts to return him to Earth, features Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and Mackenzie Davis. The film did the business of ₹30.76 crore in India.
Dune: Part 1 - 2021

The space-opera, which is adapted from the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, is directed by Denis Villeneuve. Contrary to its global success, the film raked in merely ₹4.29 crore in India, thus turning out to be a disappointing affair.
Dune: Part 2 - 2024

Compared to the first part, the sequel, which saw Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem reprise their roles, performed better at the box office by raking in ₹30.13 crore.
