Adivi Sesh: “Har Kisi Ko Har Kisi Se Badla Lena Aaj Kal, Which Is Why Revenge Dramas Are Popular” (EXCLUSIVE)

Adivi made his debut in 2002, with a small role in “Sontham” in 2002, and followed it up with a full-fledged debut in “Karma,” in 2010. Neither performed well at the box office. His growth has been gradual. He played a villain in “Panja” in 2011 and worked his way up to the protagonist in “Ksahnam” in 2016. He delivered a hit with “Goodachari,” in 2018. He rose to national prominence with “Major,” based on Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s life, in 2022. Later that year his Telugu thriller “Hit: The Second Case” became a money spinner. Last year, he did a brief cameo in “Hit: The Third Case.”

Currently, the actor, is gung-ho about “Dacait,” a revenge drama which releases on April 10. It’s about  an ex-convict, released from jail is out to avenge his ex-girlfriend for betraying him. It’s a film that is close to Sesh’s heart as he co-wrote the script. “When I write a script, I do not keep myself in mind. But at the same time, I don’t commence writing a script if I’m not going to be acting in it, if that makes sense? See, if I’m visualizing myself, then I am not doing justice to the film, I’m doing justice to myself, right?” ” he asks.

He agress that revenge dramas are the popular genre this season. “Yeah, maybe we’re all reacting to society at large. Films reflect society, you know.  Har kisi ko har kisi se badla lena aaj kal, which is why revenge dramas are popular right now,” he quips in fluent Hindi.

Producers were hesitant to release their films alongside “Dhurandar 2.” “Dacait” moved from March 19 release to April 10. “We moved the date because we needed better showcasing. “Dacait” has been shot in two versions, Hindi and Telugu. The Hindi version is not dubbed, so to do justice to the Hindi version we moved the date forward,” he admits.

The conversation gravitates to the South Indian film industry exhibitors’ decision of giving films an eight-week window before they release on OTT. Sesh expresses his opinion. “I’m very much in favour of an eight-week window between film’s release and it’s OTT release. Now whether my producers can implement it, I don’t know…. That’s really up to parties who are much bigger than me,” he diplomatically responds.

You remind him that “Toxic,” another potential blockbuster is up for release in May giving “Dacait,” a decent window to perform. “I hope so. We’re trying to give it the best chance possible because it’s a passion project. My best friend directed it. It’s very much sort of a family project involving all the people I love very dearly. The teaser and the song, *Ruba*, have really worked, so I’m very excited,” he adds.

“Goodachari” arrives later this year. He explains the reason behind the delay,  “Dacait was supposed to release in December last year, but it got pushed to April this year. I had an injury while shooting the film. I tore my PCL and could not shoot action scenes for three months. Now, considering Dacait is a love story with action in it, and G2 is a true-blue action film, everything went for a toss. And now with Dacait releasing on April 10, it did not make sense to have another release 20 days later.”

“G2” clearly is his passion project.  “G2 is mammoth. It’s a very exciting star cast. We shot this film in six different countries in minus 23-degree weather. It’s something else. The first version has been largely responsible for my success, it brought back the spy genre to Telugu cinema. I am prepared for the comparisons that will arise with the first film. We’re trying to make it a world-class film. Let’s hope that we are successful in our attempts."
