’56 Days’, ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4, ‘Maxton Hall’: Five Recently Released Series With Insane On-Screen Chemistry

By Hitakshi Nagda

On-screen chemistry can lift an average show to a great extent and that is true across mediums. “Bridgerton 4” is getting immense love due to Yerin Ha and Luke Thompson’s impeccable camaraderie while “56 Days” actors Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia are the talk of the town. Across streaming platforms, languages, and genres, these are the recent shows where the chemistry between leads became the reason audiences showed up and kept showing up.

'56 Days'
56 days is a series that is streaming on Prime Video, starring Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia. The actors play a couple, Ciara and Oliver, who are in a rush to move-in together as cops discover a body in Oliver’s apartment. The series moves back and forth as the real nature of the main protagonists get revealed amidst twists and turns.

The critics were divided on whether the show would succeed or not. The fact that the best scenes belonged to these two is testimony that perhaps the pairing was the best aspect of “56 Days.”

'Bridgerton' Season Four
Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha were the leads for the fourth season after the third one kind of failed to live upto the fans expectations. To the surprise of critics who had braced for disappointment, the duo delivered. While Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie’s (Yerin Ha) story reminded fans of the classic Cinderella story, the two brought a sense of playfulness and ease that the show had been missing for a while. Shonda Rhimes called their chemistry in “Bridgerton” Season 4 “like no other”, which is the kind of thing producers always say, except this time the audience agreed as well. It is streaming on Netflix.

‘Boyfriend on Demand’
Jisoo and Seo In-guk make an interesting case for chemistry in this K-drama series that is built on contrast rather than compatibility. As a burned-out webtoon producer and her sharp-edged real-world rival, their dynamic operates on friction, the kind that makes every scene interesting to watch. What makes it work is that the show does not ask you to root for ease. It asks you to watch two people who clearly want different things from each other but cannot stop being in the same room. “Boyfriend on Demand” is getting the attention of the audience worldwide and is streaming on Netflix.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’
A show that gained a lot of popularity on social media for the chemistry between Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Christopher Briney). The central tension in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” is its main highlight. Season three lets it breathe in a way the previous two seasons rarely did. The love-triangle scenario is a regular trope, but in this series, it looks like it was invented specifically for them. The season, streaming on Prime Video, delivered and earned a viewership of about 25 million global viewers in the first week alone. The intense storytelling and chemistry created through each episode made it an interesting watch.

‘Maxton Hall’
The German boarding school drama, Maxton Hall, streaming on Prime Video, had a notoriously difficult second season– a darker tone, a cartoonish villain, and a finale that frustrated nearly everyone who watched it. And yet Harriet Herbig-Matten and Damian Hardung held the whole thing together by sheer force of their chemistry. The scenes of  James and Ruby have a sense of emotional chemistry that lands when both actors are genuinely in sync.

What these five series collectively demonstrate is that chemistry is not just the writing or budget but how the audience actually perceives it through time and the hype that is created when the audience actually feels something. These recently aired series have been something that has caught the attention of the audience in one way or another, with distinctive storylines that build through each series.
