‘3 Idiots’ Sequel Or ‘Munna Bhai 3’? Rajkumar Hirani Reveals His Next Project (EXCLUSIVE)
Rajkumar Hirani, the blockbuster filmmaker behind cult hits such as the “Munna Bhai” franchise, “3 Idiots,” “PK” and “Sanju,” has largely stayed away from the spotlight since his last directorial, “Dunki” (2023), starring Shah Rukh Khan.
While fans continue to await his next film, the director has been actively developing multiple scripts, including ideas for sequels to “3 Idiots” and “Munna Bhai.”
Speaking exclusively to Variety India, Hirani says, “I have a couple of ideas at the moment. I’m actually working on both the films. I’ve been working on a ‘Munna Bhai’ script and also on a ‘3 Idiots’ sequel idea.”

Sharing that he is yet to crack the climax of the Sanjay Dutt-Arshad Warsi starrer, Hirani adds, “For ‘Munna Bhai’ I had an idea, which is done to a larger level, but still, I haven’t found the right end for it.”
Hirani reveals that the idea for a sequel to the Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan-led “3 Idiots” emerged unexpectedly. “For ‘3 Idiots’ (sequel), it was just very recently that suddenly, out of nowhere, this one idea sparked up. And I have no idea how it’s gone out in the universe. Because it’s still not there, but we said we’ll work on it. And then, as and when it happens… but somehow one morning, I saw that the news is out there,” the filmmaker says.
Hirani currently has multiple scripts in development and will soon decide which project to take forward. “I have three or four scripts with me at the moment, and I’ll have to pretty quickly take a call on which way to walk now,” he concludes.
Hirani is known for his slice-of-life, realistic storytelling with a perfect balance of humor and emotions. Apart from garnering critical acclaim, his films often enjoy long-run at the box-office.
