Sunny Deol’s ‘Border 2’ Continues Its Domination, Nears 300 Crore at Box Office

Sunny Deol's "Border 2" continued its dominance at the box office in its second week. The Anurag Singh-directed war drama, which had collected 225 crore over the first week, added a further 71 crore net in the second week, taking its total box office collection to 295 crore net in India.

Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, "Border 2" has emerged as a sureshot box office success. While the collection witnessed a steep decline of approximately 65-66% in the 2nd week, it has remained the top choice for theatre-going audiences. However, the film has fallen short of the high expectations, as trade experts were anticipating it to achieve numbers closer to "Gadar 2". A stronger emotional connection and tighter storytelling could have propelled the film into record-breaking territory, but it failed to resonate well with audiences, preventing it from reaching those heights.

Despite this, "Border 2" has outperformed recent Republic Day releases such as "Sky Force" (112.75 cr) and "Fighter" (212.73 cr). With no big releases this week, it's expected to retain its top position again and is projected to close its theatrical run in the range of 340-350 crore net. This would make it the first Bollywood box office hit of the year. The film has also delivered solid results overseas, earning approximately 52 crore, taking its worldwide total to approx. 405 crore gross.

Rani Mukerji's "Mardaani 3" has performed largely in line with expectations. It collected approximately 27 crore in the first week, which is a respectable number given its reported 30-crore budget. However, if compared to the franchise's last instalment, "Mardaani 2", it has underperformed, as the previous part earned a far better 28.05 crore in the opening week and 47.35 crore in toal, whereas "Mardaani" had collected 22.87 crore in the first week and 35.65 crore in lifetime. "Mardaani 3" is expected to wrap up its theatrical journey close to the lifetime total of "Mardaani". Although the project will remain profitable for Yash Raj Films due to strong digital and music rights, it is likely to be regarded as a theatrical disappointment.

Last week's other new releases, "MayaSabha" and "Gandhi Talks", failed to generate any buzz, resulting in negligable collection at the box office.
