Sudip Sharma On ‘Kohrra’ Season 3: ‘I’m Not Even Thinking About It Right Now’ — Teases A ‘Drastically Different’ Next Project (EXCLUSIVE)

Filmmaker Sudip Sharma has been widely appreciated for delivering a strong second season of “Kohrra,” the Netflix procedural thriller that's been extremely well-received. He is already on to his next project, reportedly reuniting with Barun Sobti and “Paatal Lok” lead Jaideep Ahlawat. He exclusively speaks to Variety India about "Kohrra” Season 3, and how he wants to experiment with genres and possibly make a slice-of-life project, completely different from everything he has made so far.

Sharma spoke at length about what made “Kohrra” Season 2 work and why he feels it resonates with audiences. Currently in the process of filming his next show, he shares that he has no clarity on the third season of “Kohrra” at the moment and has indeed taken a break from that story to focus on new projects.

About “Kohrra” Season 3, Sharma said he is not thinking about a third season right now and has no plans in place. “I don’t know, honestly. Right now, I’m not even thinking about it. It’s just been one big thing off my back, finally. And I’m already on a set doing something else. Let’s see.”

But will he ever make a slice-of-life or a feel-good film? The next project he is working on is “drastically” different from everything he has created so far, says Sharma adding, “I don’t know about feel-good films. But if you’re asking whether I’ll make lighter films: Yes, I’m already working on one. The next one is going to be drastically different from anything that I’ve done in the past. I don’t want to be boxed in one particular direction. These are stories that naturally attracted me all this while, but right now I’m gravitating toward other kinds of stories as well,” Sharma said.

During our earlier conversation with Sharma during the promotions of “Kohrra” Season 2, he also explained why he thinks the series works. “I think it's... the people, the characters that you create. I have a very strong faith in the salience of characters, especially in long-form storytelling, even more than in cinema. When a person is sitting on his couch with the remote in his hand and has a million options. The first being to look at his phone instead of watching TV. For him to go from one episode to another, the characters have to take him along.”

He continued, “If the characters are not taking him along on the journey, it's not going to work, no matter what the genre is. The most important thing is characters who are interesting enough, layered enough, for viewers to say, ‘I relate to this person,’ or ‘Who is this person? Why is he doing what he's doing?’ — and to find him interesting enough to spend the next four or six hours understanding him better. And maybe, in that process, they understand themselves a little better, too.”

Sharma is currently shooting a new project with Barun Sobti, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Abhishek Banerjee, reportedly for Netflix. According to reports, the team is on a long schedule outside Mumbai that will continue until the end of April.
