S.S. Rajamouli, Priyanka Chopra and Mahesh Babu to Shoot ‘Varanasi’s Next Schedule In Antarctica

By Sakshi Navare

S.S. Rajamouli is set to take his upcoming ambitious film, “Varanasi,” to Antarctica now. The ace filmmaker will commence shooting for the next schedule of the Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra starrer in what's the most remote continent on Earth. They will primarily shoot the film at the Ross Ice Shelf, the largest ice shelf of Antarctica.

Chopra shared the update on Twitter, while responding to Mahesh Babu's post that complimented her performance in her recently released Hollywood film, The Bluff. “Thank you, my friend. See you in Antarctica," she wrote.

“Varanasi” would probably be the first Indian film to be shot in Antarctica. Filmmakers usually avoid this continent as it's the coldest place on Earth, holds 75% of the world's freshwater, has no permanent residents, and is dedicated to scientific research under the Antarctic Treaty. Its extreme weather, logistical challenge and environmental regulations make it difficult to shoot here for the filmmakers. Among the few projects shot here include documentaries like “Encounters at the End of the World” (2007), “Antarctica: A Year on Ice” (2013), and the 1919 documentary “South.”

“Varanasi” is defined as the most ambitious film yet by S.S. Rajamouli, who's known for helming blockbusters like the “Baahubali” film franchise and globally celebrated “RRR.” His new film is a time-travelling, globe-trotting adventure mounted on an unprecedented scale and shot in IMAX cameras.

Speaking about the film, Priyanka recently said, “This movie is going to be one of India's biggest ambitions. It's positioned in an incredible way - we travel through time, we travel the world. It is an adventure; it is really cool. I am very excited for the world to see it. We have shot for over 14 months now, and there are six more months to go intermittently. He takes his time. From whatever little I am allowed to see, I think it is going to be very cool and defining for Indian cinema."

“Varanasi” is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027.
