‘Ready Or Not 2’ Review: A Bloody Sequel That Hardly Justifies Its Return
There are some films that warrant a sequel, there are some that don’t. Unfortunately, "Ready or Not 2" falls in the second category and feels like a quick cash-grab effort. The premise is the same. You are on the run. You need to stay alive. You are being hunted. This time around it’s not just Grace (Samara Weaving) who is on the run but her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton).
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett seem a bit confused about their vision for this six-year-delayed follow-up, which mostly feels unnecessary, but is occasionally fun. The reason for the fun part is one person: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Ursula. She’s not slaying vampires in this one but just to have her make an appearance after such a long gap is a delight. The movie also belongs to Samara Weaving who takes her job very seriously. She seems the most involved in making even the most bizarre plot twists work. Also the fact that she knows the genre and the setting only helps.

If you love gore, there are some really big action pieces that play out well on screen. Less is not more in this one as the directors go all out to ensure there is ample blood and new ways to meet death. The scenes between Grace and Faith where their sisterly bickering soon turns into a fight to survive are comic and entertaining at the same time.
A lot of films in this genre work if the supporting cast can see through the directors' vision. Casting someone like Elijah Wood as a lawyer is a stroke of genius. Shawn Hatosy as Titus is a great casting choice as well. When the writing falls flat (and it does in a lot of places) what works for the film is the interplay and chemistry between the cast and peripheral characters.
"Ready or Not 2" is not a great sequel, but you can’t totally dismiss it either. If you love gore and some thrill, this one might be your ticket to a fun weekend.
