Rajkummar Rao Led Sourav Ganguly Biopic Goes on Floors; Vikramaditya Motwane Confirms Start of Production

By Sakshi Navare

After months of speculation and anticipation, the Sourav Ganguly biopic has finally gone on floors. Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane, who is directing the project starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead, confirmed this development.

Motwane took to Instagram to share a picture of the Sourav Ganguly Stand at a stadium. Alongside the image, the filmmaker wrote in the caption, “Take your seat.” The project is being produced by Luv Films and will see Rao step into the shoes of the former India captain, with early chatter around the actor’s transformation for the role already drawing attention.

It was in January that reports first suggested that Motwane had begun location recce for the film and was aiming to begin shooting by the end of March. As per those reports, the biopic is expected to be shot extensively across Mumbai, Kolkata and London.

The film is also being shaped with inputs from those close to Ganguly’s life and journey. Sanjay Das, one of Ganguly’s close friends who is also involved in the development of the project, has reportedly confirmed that the biopic will chronicle the cricketer’s rise while placing particular focus on his transformative captaincy during the early 2000s — a period that significantly altered the course and confidence of Indian cricket.

Two of the film’s most important schedules are also expected to be mounted at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London and Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Lord’s, in particular, holds strong symbolic value in Ganguly’s career, being the venue where a bare-chested Ganguly famously waved his T-shirt from the balcony after India’s memorable 2002 NatWest Series win.

At the moment, there is no official word on a release timeline for the Sourav Ganguly biopic.
