No ‘3 Idiots’ Re-Release: Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films Refutes Rumors of Aamir Khan-Starrer Returning to Theaters

Amid a theatrical re-release boom in India and the world, the makers of “3 Idiots” are making it clear that they are not planning any such projects at the moment. A notice was shared with the media declining that the film is not re-releasing in the cinemas. They asserted that any reports of the 2009 movie coming back to the big screens need not be trusted. 

The statement from Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films reads, “With reference to recent media reports claiming that 3 Idiots will be re-released on 4th September, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films would like to clarify that these reports are false and factually incorrect. We request members of the media and fans to rely solely on official announcements made through Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films’ verified channels. We urge media publications to refrain from publishing or circulating unverified information”.

Starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in the titular roles, the Rajkumar Hirani directorial also features Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Mona Singh and Omi Vaidya. It is produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra with Abhijat Joshi joining in as a co-writer. On its release, the movie managed to earn over ₹400 crore at the box office and has won domestic as well as international accolades for its portrayal of engineering college students’ lives.

Said to be loosely based on “Five Point Someone” by Chetan Bhagat, “3 Idiots” has remained an iconic Hindi-language film 17 years later. Meanwhile, a sequel to the film has been confirmed by Hirani, who has denied claims of there being a fourth "idiot". It is expected to be set 20 years after the original.
