‘Never Had Any Fear’: Omega X Vocalist Kevin On Debuting With A Boy Love Series, ‘My Bias Is Showing!’ (EXCLUSIVE)

By ,

Omega X, the K-Pop boy group, is now on a tour in Europe. One of the popular members of the band is Kevin (real name: Park Jin-woo). He made his debut last year with the Korean Boy Love (BL) series, “My Bias Is Showing!”. After his bandmates Hangyeom (real name: Song Han-gyeom), Jaehan (real name: Kim Jae-han) and Yechan (real name: Shin Ye-Chan), Kevin is the fourth member to debut as an actor. He tells Variety India that he was always interested in acting. The boy love genre has exploded in popularity in the Far East and Southeast Asian region in the past few years.

However, very few idols from South Korea have started their acting careers with a Boy Love (BL) series. Kevin tells us he did not have any apprehensions, stating, “I never had any fear around it. I was just happy to be able to debut as an actor with a good opportunity, no matter what the genre is, and it was an honor to meet and work with great colleagues.” He also said he finds the genre interesting with a unique atmosphere.

In the series “My Bias Is Showing!” Kevin plays the role of Na Ae Jun, a school teacher who is a secret fan of a popular male idol. Sparks fly after the two meet at his school, where his idol has come for a film shoot. The series aired on the Asian drama platform iQIYI in India. Kevin got good reviews for his endearing performance. According to him, falling in love with someone is one of the purest of human emotions. He says, “The key point I had in my mind while acting as Na Ae Jun was purity. I believe liking someone is one of the purest human emotions, so I focused mainly on that when studying for my character.”

We know that K-Pop idols and their fans share a very special relationship. This is one aspect that makes the Korean music industry different from the rest of the world. On the show, he is a closeted fan who struggles with his feelings after he finds himself in close contact with his idol, Choi Se-yeol, played by Kim Kang-min. Elaborating on this, Kevin tells us, “Definitely. I actually drew inspiration and learned a lot from my fans through a communication app I use to talk with them, and on any occasion, I meet them in person.”

We often hear discussions on how the fandom culture can be a bit tiring for Korean idols at times. Fans also see their favorites as a source of comfort. However, he does not find it bothersome, says, “It does not put any pressure on me. It is an honor and something that I feel thankful for that our fans could rely on us and feel comfortable with us after a difficult day.”

Over the years, the world of K-dramas has seen many male and female idols who successfully balanced both singing and acting. From Rain ("Bloodhounds 2") to Lee Jun-Ho ("Cashero") and icons like Bae Suzy ("Vagabond"), there are many notable examples. Kevin tells us that he does not wish to emulate any of these and would like to create his own identity. He shares, “There are so many great actors, but rather than having one specific role model on my mind, I try to focus on becoming a successful actor myself.” He also discloses that he did all the prep on his own for “My Bias Is Showing."

He signs off, saying that India is on his bucket list and he would love to visit the country one day.
