Assi Trailer Out: Taapsee Pannu Reunites With Anubhav Sinha For Yet Another Courtroom Drama

Actors and directors reuniting after successful last films is always an event of sorts. The latest pairing to join this brigade is Taapsee Pannu finding her way back to the Anubhav Sinha world for yet another courtroom drama tackling a potent conversation about an evil that plagues our world. Assi marks the reunion of the actor and director and has been making news ever since the first look was revealed. The makers of the feature film have now revealed the trailer of the movie.

Backed by T-Series and Sinha’s Benaras Media Works, the trailer of Assi opens to an unsettling event. A woman played by Kani Kusruti is kidnapped and raped by a group of men. We are then taken to her battle to not just seek justice but the struggle to get back to a normal life as the entire family is affected, including her son. Enters Taapsee Pannu, who plays a lawyer and is fighting for Kani’s character. The film taps into investigating the crime and the dark deep alleys of the system and our world.

As per the announcement, Assi aims to be more than just a courtroom clash, the drama challenges the conscience, raising uncomfortable questions about morality, accountability, and the future we are shaping for the next generation. The film however marks the return of Taapsee Pannu to courtroom dramas. The actor has worked in Mulk (2018), also directed by Sinha. She played a lawyer there too. Apart from Mulk, she has been a part of Pink (2016), Rashmi Rocket (2021), Badla (2019), Thappad (2020), which also has themes of legal proceedings.

Courtroom dramas as a genre over the years has become one of the most tried ones and that makes things a bit tricky for Assi. Considering Anubhav himself has given one of the best courtroom dramas to the country with Mulk, the pressure is very high. By the trailer, Assi is well padded with the investigation part, which gives the movie an additional upper hand. Written by Gaurav Solanki, the movie also stars Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa and others.

Reflecting on the trailer, director Anubhav Sinha added, “For me, my film has to hit the core of the story. With Assi, it felt like a loud thud exactly where it should. That impact compelled me to make this film. The story draws from everyday news, realities we often choose to ignore. To tell a story like this, Taapsee is a natural; you just take her there and she delivers her best. And with Bhushan Kumar backing a film like Assi, we know we’re striking the nail in the right corner.”

Sharing her thoughts, Taapsee says, “I felt it was time to bring these stories together and put them in front of people to remind ourselves that what we read as everyday crime news should never be normalised. These incidents are alarming, they’re happening around us, and they seem to be growing. Sometimes it’s not just about the crime itself, but also about how little we do to stop it in our own capacity. When we shaped this into a two-hour narrative, it became deeply moving for me as a performer, because it forces you to confront a reality we often look away from.”

The film is set to release exclusively in theatres worldwide on 20th February, 2026.
