5 Things the Early Reviews of Duffer Brothers’ ‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’ Reveal as the ‘Stranger Things’ Creators Return to Horror

Just when the world was getting over “Stranger Things” ending, the Duffer Brothers have returned to the horror space with another unsettling title that seems to already be making the right kind of noise. “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” had managed to hook audiences the moment it was announced, largely because the title alone was dramatic, eerie, and hard to ignore. Now that the show has landed on Netflix, the reviews coming in are largely positive. The first wave of reactions suggests the series is tapping into a very specific kind of modern TV horror, one that is less about spectacle and more about mood, restraint, and emotional unease. Here are five things the early reviews seem to be pointing toward.

It is playing the long game with tension

A lot of the early response suggests this is not a show trying to scare you every ten minutes. It seems far more interested in stretching discomfort and letting dread settle in slowly. That can be a risk in the streaming era, where everything is expected to move fast, but it is also often what makes these shows stay with you. The unease appears to come less from what jumps out at you and more from what feels wrong before you can even explain why.

The mood seems to be doing a lot of the work

One thing critics appear to be agreeing on is that the show knows how to create atmosphere. That matters more than ever in horror and thrillers, because if the world does not feel convincing, the tension collapses quickly. From the way it is being described, this seems like a show that understands the value of silences, pauses, and spaces where not much is happening on the surface, but everything feels loaded underneath.

It does not sound like “Stranger Things” 2.0

That is probably one of the more interesting takeaways. Anything with the Duffer Brothers attached was always going to invite comparisons, but the early response suggests this is not trying to chase the same kind of nostalgic, crowd pleasing energy. If anything, it sounds more contained, more adult, and less interested in giving the audience easy relief. That separation is important, because the last thing a show like this needed was to feel like a shadow of something bigger.

It seems to trust the audience a little more

One of the recurring frustrations with a lot of streaming thrillers is that they either over explain everything or panic halfway through and start throwing twists around. The early reviews make this one sound a bit more controlled. There seems to be a willingness to hold back, let scenes breathe, and not spell every feeling out. That kind of restraint usually tells you a show has confidence in what it is doing.

It may be taking too long to get where it is going

One of the recurring criticisms around the show is that it may take a little too long to get where it is ultimately headed. While the slow burn approach is clearly intentional, some early reviews feel the series stretches its dread a bit too far before offering enough narrative payoff, making portions of it feel more drawn out than tightly wound.

“Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” is now streaming on Netflix.
